February 6, 1925 ~ June 19, 2017
We are saddened to announce that Marjorie, after a short illness, passed away peacefully at Royal University Hospital surrounded by people she loved. Marjorie was born in Watrous, youngest daughter of Agnes Cowan Taylor Laird and Archie Laird, and grew up in the Mount Lorraine School district with 3 Taylor and 3 Laird siblings. It was a happy home with lots of laughter and music. Marjorie had a beautiful voice and played lively piano accompaniment to old time dance music for her violin playing father, brother Malcom and others. At the age of 15, her family moved to Saskatoon and she graduated from Nutana Collegiate. Later she worked at the Cancer Clinic at Saskatoon City Hospital and was the head of the Department of Medical Statistics. Marjorie was a particularly kind and outgoing person, loved by all and generously shared her time and talents to her church and community. She was especially thoughtful to the shut-in, lonely, ill or bereaved and her joyous nature and sense of humor brightened everyone’s day. She liked nothing better than a visit, a game of cards or to just keep in touch with friends, neighbours and family. Her Christmas card and letter list was huge! Marjorie married her classmate and best friend Bob on June 23, 1951 in Third Avenue United Church and in 1954 they moved to the farm west of Simpson where their daughter Nancy was raised. Mom loved the farm and as it had excellent drinking water there was a steady stream of people who came for water and good company. In 1987, she and Bob retired to Saskatoon where she, a lifetime staunch supporter of the United Church, found wonderful friends in the UCW as well as the seniors groups and at the YWCA. She thoroughly enjoyed singing with the WDM Choir for over two decades. She said often how fortunate she felt to have had such a happy life. We feel very fortunate to have had her. She leaves to mourn her husband of 66 years, Bob; daughter Nancy and son-in-law Wolfgang and 4 grandchildren who delighted her: Sabrina, Derek, Anita and Niels; her sister Dorothy Gross and sisters-in-law Marion Robinson and Billy Laird and many nephews, nieces and their families. She was predeceased by siblings and in-laws Jim Taylor (Rachel), Joan Childs (George), Bill Taylor (Ada), Malcolm Laird (Ivy), Charlie Laird, Tom Robinson, and John Robinson, John Gross, nieces and nephews Jim Childs and son George, Shirley Crawford, Lorne Taylor, infant Alvin Taylor, Murray Robinson and Lynn Robinson. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Martin’s United Church (corner of Wilson Crescent and Clarence Avenue) on Friday, June 23 at 1:00 p.m. Donations may be directed to the Western Development Museum (2610 Lorne Avenue, S7J 0S6). Funeral arrangements in care of John Schachtel – Mourning Glory Funeral Services (306) 978-5200.
