It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Mary Anne Horvath passed away peacefully on February 8, 2026, at the age of 89 years at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, surrounded by family. Mary Anne was born on September 5, 1936, in Arabella, SK, the daughter of Mike and Anne Olenick and the eldest of 7 children. She was educated at Arabella School and Sacred Heart Academy in Yorkton, and graduated from nursing school in 1958, spending her nursing career at the Grey Nuns Hospital in Regina, SK. She married her sweetheart Alex (Sandy) Horvath in 1958, and they were married for 67 years before she passed. They had one daughter and they lived their married life in Regina until moving to Saskatoon in 2019 to be closer to their daughter and her family. Throughout their marriage, Mary Anne and Alex enjoyed camping, fishing, gardening, traveling and spending time with family. Mary Anne and Alex eventually had 3 grandchildren who were very dear to them. Her grandchildren have many fond memories of walking to Grandma's house from school for lunch and enjoying the special treats she'd make for them. Mary Anne had many interests and hobbies including cooking, baking, reading, needle work, knitting and crocheting. She felt so much joy from spending holidays with family, especially at Christmas where she treated them to the most delicious Ukrainian dishes. She created beautiful afghan blankets and baby blankets, and many of her family have these as keepsakes to remember her by.
Mary Anne will be dearly missed by her husband, Alex, daughter Shannon Buckingham and son-in-law Kerby of Saskatoon, grandchildren Adam (Crystal) of Battleford, SK, Aaron (Shannon) of Warman, Sk, Tenneal Allen (Chris) of Airdrie, AB, and 7 great-grandchildren. She will also be fondly remembered and missed by her siblings John Olenick (Dot, decd.) of Nictaux, Nova Scotia, Sylvia Clayton (Allan, decd.) of Regina, Jullian Olenick (Rosalind) of Regina, Faye Olenick (Bob Rogers, decd.) of Regina, Terry Olenick (Dianna, decd.) of High River, AB, and brother-in-law Orest Kiryluk of Regina. She is predeceased by her parents Mike and Anne Olenick, sister Olga Kiryluk, and several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Mary Anne's family would like to express gratitude to the caregivers at Circle Drive Special Care Home where Mary Anne lived since 2021, and to the staff at Royal University Hospital who provided comfort and care during her final days.
A Service of Remembrance for Mary Anne will be held at Mourning Glory-Acadia McKague's Funeral Chapel, 915 Acadia Drive, Saskatoon, in the spring of 2026. Date and time to be announced at a later date.
