Mildred was predeceased by her husband Bill, her parents Lilian and Edward Smith, her sister Joan Barr, her brothers Cornelius Smith, and Marvin Smith. Mildred was born on the family farm near Beechy, Saskatchewan and moved to Swift Current to attend high school. She lived with her Uncle Cornelius and his wife Betty and their family. Mildred trained as a nurse in Saskatoon at St. Paul’s Hospital. While living with Betty and Uncle Corny she met Betty’s brother, Bill, and they married on January 10, 1953. They lived on a farm outside of Swift Current for ten years and had four children together before Bill decided to take up teaching due to health reasons. Mildred nursed in Oxbow and Prince Albert SK as they raised their family. She was the Director of Nursing at Mont St. Joseph Nursing Home before retiring to Salmon Arm BC where they lived for 14 years. It was there that she was diagnosed with Celiac Disease which changed her life. Her health improved significantly with the change in diet and she was extremely fortunate to have had so many healthy years since then. They moved back to Saskatoon in 2001 to be close to family. After Bill’s passing in 2007, she moved into Columbian Manor in Saskatoon where she lived and flourished until her passing. She was part of the Faith Committee and looked after the Chapel having mass every morning. She was in the choir and participated in the exercises everyday. She also was a Fire Marshal at the Manor.
The family would like to express a special thanks to the staff in the Emergency Ward, the Neurology Ward and the Palliative Care staff at the Royal University Hospital for their care and kindness to Mildred and to her family!
