1925 - 2017
Orville (‘’Andy”) Edmund Anderson passed away peacefully at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene, Oregon, on February 19, 2017 in his 92nd year. Andy was born on April 9, 1925 at Viscount, Saskatchewan. He was raised in Elstow, Saskatchewan in a close knit prairie community. He always referred to himself as a “Prairie Boy”. When he was 16 years old, he moved to Toronto, Ontario with his parents and he became a qualified welder for an aircraft manufacturing company. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy and saw active duty as a stoker aboard the HMS Petrolia, which escorted convoys across the Atlantic. After the war he met Elizabeth while ice skating in Toronto. They were married June 7, 1947 at Bethel United Church, Ontario. They first settled at Ajax, Ontario while he finished his mining engineering studies at the University of Toronto. Andy enjoyed his work tremendously and managed large-scale mining projects. The mining life they choose led to many moves, trips and adventures including in Quebec, India, Saskatchewan, Uruguay, Iowa, Ontario, Chile, Australia, California, and Michigan. Wherever he went, he was well-liked by those who worked with him. With his wife and family he built a much-loved family cabin at Blackstrap Lake, Saskatchewan, where he also taught himself to sail. Later, he spent enjoyable time with family and friends sailing and racing on Lake Superior, Michigan. He was very handy around the house and he liked fixing anything that was broken, often engineering new parts to get it working again. They retired in Sonora, California and later moved to Novato, California. During retirement Andy volunteered his mining expertise in Malaysia and Romania. After Elizabeth’s passing, he moved to Eugene, Oregon to be closer to family. He always took an avid interest and pride in his children’s lives. Each and every grandchild and great grandchild shared a special relationship with him. He spent many happy hours playing cribbage and other card games. There was always laughter when playing with him. Throughout his life, he always touched those around him with his kindness and youthful energy. He will be sorely missed. Andy is preceded by his beloved wife of 69 years, Elizabeth, his parents, Edmund and Annie Anderson, his brother Clarence and half-brother Matt. He is survived by his children, Frances (Kando), Wayne (Pam), Brian (Glenda), Anne (Steve Champion), sister-in-law, Mary Edwards; his nine grandchildren, and three greatgrandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A Funeral service will be held at Acadia McKague’s Funeral Centre, 915 Acadia Dr., Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, on Monday, March 6th , 2017 at 10:00 a.m., with a viewing from 9:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, where his wife Elizabeth and parents also rest.
