

We the family of Robert Hickie, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, announce his peaceful passing on Sunday May 29, 2022. Bob was born in Melville, SK on August 29, 1936 to Phillip and Eva Hickie (nee: Hubenig). The resided on a farm between Killaly and Grayson, some 20 miles from Melville. Bob took his early education at the Gelowitz school until grade 6, then the family moved to Melville, and he attended St Henry’s and St Henry’s High School. He excelled in all areas, school and sports, even winning Sask Junior boxing titles. In 1954, he came to Saskatoon for university. He played on the Hilltops and tried out for the Wesley’s. He realized education was his key. He obtained his BA Pharmacy, and then enrolled in the Master’s program in Pharmacy. In the meantime, he met Doreen Wolfe; they courted and married in 1959. In 1961 off to Toronto to obtain his PhD in Pharmacology. They returned to Saskatoon in 1965 and was instrumental in forming the Pharmacology Department within the College of Medicine. Bob worked at the University of Saskatchewan from 1965 to 2014, teaching over 3,000 students, research work, renowned for his cancer research, was a member of many committees: university, city, and provincially. Bob received his Professor Emeritus. Bob enjoyed singing in many choirs: university and city, Knights of Columbus and church, but the one he truly loved was the Young at Heart. They did so much for so many. Bob was predeceased by his parents Phillip and Eva, 2 brothers and 8 sisters, and his parent in laws, Raymond and Tillie Wolfe. He leaves to mourn his wife of 63 years, Doreen; his children Dave (Melody), Paul (Penny), Colleen (Bill) Ortega, and Mark (Donna); his grandchildren, Aaron, Nolan, Karli (Chad) Summers, Megan (Derek) Lusis, Easton, and Declan; and great grandchildren, Ella and Garrett. The family would like to thank Samaritan Place, all the staff who contributed to the excellent care given to Bob. A special thank you to Fr Gerard Dewan. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, June 6 at 10:30 am from Holy Spirit Parish (114 Kingsmere Pl, Saskatoon). Memorial donations in memory of Bob may be directed to Samaritan Place (375 Cornish Road, Saskatoon, S7T 0P3) or Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan (301 2550 12th Ave, Regina, S4P 3X1).
