September 16, 1926 to December 24, 2016
Ruth Hagel (nee Howe) passed peacefully in her sleep on December 24th. Ruth was born on the family farm north of Elstow, Saskatchewan to Mary and William Howe. Ruth attended Justice School as a child and moved to Saskatoon in her late teens. Ruth married John Hagel in 1947 and together they had 4 children before separating in 1964. In addition to raising her own children, Ruth also provided short term care to several foster children and grandchildren. Ruth worked in a number of Saskatoon businesses, including the Birdcage restaurant, the Saskatoon Book Store and the café at the Park Town Hotel, from where she retired. Ruth loved reading, gardening, travelling to the lake or mountains, playing a mean game of cribbage and, most of all, spending time with her family. Ruth is predeceased by her parents, brothers George, Maurice and John, and sisters, Nellie, Phyllis, son-in-law Bill and John Hagel. Ruth is survived by her brother, Bert, and sister, Olive, her children Gail, Kayla (Bill), Lois (Harold) and Murray, her grandchildren Bruce (Crista), Adele, Kent (Diana), Leanne (Jason), Lesa (Dean), Brent (Tammy), Kristin (Mike), Ryan (Amy), Melanie, Kelsey (Matt), Terry (Rachel), Michael, Tara (Lyle), Vanessa and Amanda, 26 great grandchildren, and many friends and extended family. Ruth’s family would like to extend their gratitude and appreciation to the staff of the Central Haven Special Care Home for the wonderful care they provided her over the past two years. Donations may be made in Ruth’s memory to the Saskatchewan Lung Association or Central Havel Special Care Home. A service to celebrate Ruth’s life will be held at January 3, 2016 at 1:30 pm at the Windsor Chapel, located at 704 Windsor Street in Saskatoon. Those that cannot attend the service may view the service online at www.windsorchapelsaskatoon.com. Arrangements are entrusted to David Schurr at Mourning Glory Funeral Services.
