It is with mixed emotion that our family announces the passing of Theresa Luiten on December 23, 2022, affectionately known to all as “Gramma”. Although we share much sadness over the loss of our matriarch, we are grateful for a peaceful end to her well lived 95 years on this earth. With exception of the last few years, Theresa (Gramma) lived a very full and active life. We were all so proud of her many achievements: over two decades of dedicated workouts in the pool and gym of the YMCA, water skiing at the age of 70, walking a half marathon at 87 years of age, “winning her age category”, regular bike riding right through to the end of her 80’s, completing the Ladder Canyon hike while in Palm Desert multiple times in her 90’s, kayaking and enjoying everything else that summer life at Waskesiu has to offer, just to name a few.
She took great pride in hosting years of Sunday dinners for as many knees as she could fit under her table. She loved making her “famous soup” for family gatherings or heading up the annual croquette assembly line at Christmas time. Always putting her best foot forward, it was hard to catch her without lipstick and earrings on and in her Sunday best every day of the week, ready for her next date with an ice cream cone.
She spent many years volunteering for the church and forever making herself available to whomever needed a visit, a warm embrace, or a helping hand. Gramma also took great pride in her summertime display of flowers, enjoyed by all at her condo where she also participated on the board of directors. She enjoyed living there independently until just after her 95th birthday.
She had much to be proud of but there was nothing she loved and was dedicated to more than family.
She brought five of us into this world and we are now twenty-nine and counting. Gramma was there for all of us without fail, in every way she knew how, right until the very end. She was our “Difference Maker.” Grammas wisdom, commitment to family, youthful outlook, and the power of her prayers will be missed by us all. She will stay in our hearts always, until we can be together again.
As Gramma would say: “always walk on the sunny side of the street” and “when you put sheets on a bed, always put the flowers inward so you can be surrounded by a bouquet.”
A Catholic Mass celebrating her life will be held at a later date to be announced.
We would like to thank her condo neighbours who watched out for her in her last years, “our Louisa” who so lovingly helped her live independently in her last year and to the staff at JCL Care Home whose exceptional culture was that of a “Home” where they were incredibly committed and caring to meet all of Grammas needs until the very end.
See you on the other side Gramma.
