Tom was born and raised in Saskatoon where he attended the University of Saskatchewan graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering. From a young age he had a singular passion for aviation. He joined Air Cadets to begin gliding and obtained his private pilot license at age 17. After University he joined the Canadian military as a pilot and was stationed at Baden-Soellingen, Germany for six years, did test pilot training in England for one year and was subsequently stationed at Cold Lake. After retirement, Tom joined the Armed Forces reserves and continued working as a test pilot. He remained in Cold Lake for 34 years. Apart from aviation, Tom enjoyed kayaking, biking and walking. He had a large collection of music and books. He was much beloved by his nieces, nephews and neighbor kids as represented by an excerpt from a message he received just before his death: “Thank you for being the fun, crazy uncle to all of us kids. You were the guy to climb trees and put up swings and no matter the weather you took us to parks, sledding, to the beach or just digging around the back alleys. You always made so much time for us and you were the dad so many of us wished we had. We are thankful to have had you in our lives as a positive role model. All the time and energy you spent made for great childhood memories. We looked forward to your visits and were always sad to see you go.” Mourning Tom’s passing are his mother and father Lorette and Elmer Klassen, siblings Allan, Judy, Glenn [Kim], Neil [Crystal], Brenda, Joan [Mike], Keith [Lauri], Lorne and Marianne [Dean], aunts Lil and Estelle as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
