Bill was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. His parents were William and Betty-Lou Lamon. Bill was raised along with his three siblings in Wawa, Ontario. He had two younger brothers, Ken and Derek, and one younger sister, Ruth.
As a young child, Bill enjoyed many activities such as hockey and Sea Cadets. Summer months were spent at the family camp on Sandy Beach in Wawa and at his Grandpa Lamon's camp in Haviland with his many aunts, uncles and cousins. As a teenager he developed a love of cars and shared that love with many of his Wawa buddies.
Bill was hired by the Township of Michipicoten where he started his Mechanic Apprenticeship. He completed the course requirements at George Brown College and Sault College. He was a life-long learner and throughout his career attained many professional certifications. He was particularly proud of becoming a Certified Road Supervisor from the Association of Ontario Road Superintendents. He also received a Long Time Service Award from the Ontario Good Roads Association after his retirement.
On March 16, 1974 Bill exchanged wedding vows with his high school sweetheart, Helen, at St. Monica Parish in Wawa, Ontario.
Very much like a kid himself, Bill was a proud and supportive dad to his children and grandchildren. He and Helen were blessed with three daughters, Samantha, Sherry and Sandra. They were also blessed with 8 grandchildren who all love their grandpa very much.
Bill worked for the town of Wawa for 33 years with his primary occupation as Director of Public Works. He began as a mechanic and worked his way up through the Public Works Department to Director until his retirement in 2009.
Travel and vacations were experiences that Bill truly enjoyed. He preferred to seek out excitement wherever he went but he was partial to vacations that were laid back with an atmosphere of “live and let live.” He was willing to leave his plans open and flexible, just in case something more interesting came along. Favourite vacations included his 25th wedding anniversary trip to Hawaii, driving out west with Ken and Cindy and white water rafting with his family on the Ottawa River. One Christmas Helen surprised Bill with a Caribbean cruise!
When Bill’s retirement finally came in 2009, he was well prepared. He was able to easily adapt to the change and enjoyed spending time with his brother Ken having fun and relaxing. He also found new pleasure in riding his motorcycle with his brother Derek. Finally, his new life involved relocating to Sault Ste. Marie to be with his wife.
Bill passed away on January 22, 2013 at Sault Area Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Bill's death was sudden and unexpected. He is survived by his wife, Helen; his children Samantha, Sherry and Sandra; his son-in-laws and grandchildren; his brother Derek and sister Ruth. Services were held at the Arthur Funeral Home Chapel in Sault Ste. Marie.
Bill was the kind of person who could win others over easily. A contagious laugh, blue eyes and huge smile, he was a friend to everyone. Whenever you asked how he was doing, he always responded with a resounding "Fantastic"! If Bill had a favourite saying, it was definitely "Let's Make it Happen." He enjoyed his life and the experience of living it. This is how everyone will remember Bill Lamon.
