Danny Linklater was known as many things to many people. He was a loved one, a friend, and someone special. To family and friends who knew him best, Danny will be remembered as a very exceptional and kind person.
He was the son of George and Vi Linklater. Danny grew up in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario.
Danny was raised with four siblings. He had one sister, Bonnie, and three brothers, Jimmy, Gerry and Chuck. Danny was usually involved in all sorts of activities with his siblings. He and his siblings experienced rivalries typical of a growing family, but they shared many life experiences over the years.
As a young boy, Danny had a number of interests. Like most children, he enjoyed playing and making up games. He was curious about the world around him, but had a very quiet demeanor. Danny was an active child who took part in hockey all his life. He spent many hours at the Memorial Gardens as what we called a "rink rat', cleaning the ice, etc, to earn extra money. In his spare time as a child, he liked going down to camp to be with his grandpa Stanley, gramma Florence, his parents, his aunts, uncles and cousins. Danny's memorable achievements included helping others all his life and working from a very young age. However, to Danny, the most fun to be had was simply playing and spending time with his family.
Always considered a “good” friend to those he knew, Danny enjoyed a broad group of acquaintances and several very close friends during his lifetime. While growing up, some of his best friends were his cousins, Donna, Judy, Brenda, Bill, and Brad. Later in life, he became close friends with Dan Crosson and co-workers Gator and Murray.
Danny worked hard to be a good father to his children and he did his best to fulfill their needs. Another blessing for Danny was the gift of two grandchildren and one on the way, Peyton and Landon.
Fortunately, Danny enjoyed what he did for a living. Showing a strong work ethic, Danny worked diligently and did his best to succeed in his career. His primary occupation was Steelworker. He was employed for 30 years by the Essar formerly Algoma Steel. Danny always sought to be a team player, doing what was necessary in order to get the job done.
Danny enjoyed his leisure time by taking part in various activities. He worked most of his life, fixing cars, taking care of apartment buildings and found great satisfaction helping older people. He was content to enjoy his favorite pastimes alone but was also willing to share his interests with others.
Danny found pleasure in sports. Danny stayed active playing hockey most of his life. Recreational sports included hockey and golfing. Danny was also something of a sports fan and enjoyed following his favorite events whenever he had the chance to do so. Tops on his list were hockey and golfing.
Danny had been baptized with Aunt Sylvia and Uncle John Fasenello being his godparents.
Though he never set out to gain individual recognition, Danny was given accolades for his many and varied accomplishments throughout his life. Danny, as foreman at the Essar, was well liked by all his men and his caring for the seniors was well known. His kindness for the seniors was shown as he moved many cars from the parking lots during the cold winter months so the seniors would not have to go out.
Danny enjoyed traveling and time away on vacations. It was a chance for him to renew and relax, to visit new places and experience new things. Danny liked Las Vegas but his heart was always at his camp on Desbarats Lake.
His new life involved his wonderful partner, Margaret and her children, visiting more often with son Steven and Laura, and daughter Melanie and Richard, spending more time at his camp at Desbarats Lake, working security at Tenaris, maintenance of two apartment buildings and attending Greyhound games as a Season ticket holder. In retirement, he found new pleasure in visiting his grandchildren, camping, golfing and boating on his pontoon boat. The annual fishing derby was always an enjoyment to him as he was accompanied by family and friends and drove his boat proudly in it. One derby when he had trouble with the motor on his boat, he was so embarrassed by the breakdown that we couldn't help but poke fun at him until he laughed with us too. Even in retirement, Danny continued to stay in touch with his old friends while making plenty of new acquaintances. Danny was active in his community and felt fulfilled with the opportunities retirement offered him.
Danny passed away on October 10, 2012 at Sault Area Hospital. Danny fought a very courageous battle against cancer. He is survived by his wife, Margaret, his children, Steven and Melanie, grandchildren Peyton and Landon, stepchildren Craig and Gemma and brother Gerry. Services were held at Arthur Funeral Home. Danny was laid to rest in Desbarats Cemetary.
Simply stated, Danny was a good and kind person, an individual who will for all time be remembered by his family and friends as being a caring and giving person, someone who was a vital part of their lives. Danny leaves behind him a legacy of life-long friendships and many cherished memories. Everyone whose life he touched will always remember Danny Linklater.
