He is survived by his devoted wife, Carolyn Ann West (née Baker), and their cherished children: Catherine DeClerck (Tom Fraser), David W. West (Lori-Ann), Jennifer Lees (Gordon), and Kimberly Wright (Ron). Affectionately known as “Pop,” David was a proud grandfather to Meghan West (Chris Jenkins), Gavin West (Jackie Dela Cruz), Morgan Lees, James Lees, Ethan West, Melody Wright, Wendy Lees, Allison Lees, and Alyse Wright; and a loving great-grandfather to Kai West, Arie West, Rhett West, and Calum Jenkins.
David was the beloved son of the late David W. “Bill” West and Grace West, and brother to the late Virginia Curran (late Everett) and Hugh West (Grace).
A born-again Christian, David accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his Saviour on May 26, 1951. His life was a steadfast testimony to his faith, humility, and love for others.
David attended Prince Charles Elementary School, one year at Sault Collegiate, and Soo Tech High School before completing post-secondary studies in Engineering Technology at the DeVry Institute of Technology. He began his career at Crothers Equipment in Sault Ste. Marie, later joining Algoma Steel, where he served faithfully for 32 years, retiring as Supervisor in the Electrical Repair Shop.
David and Carolyn met as teenagers—ages 14 and 16—when David drove his first pickup truck to visit his cousins in Toronto in 1956. They were married six years later, in May 1963, beginning a 62-year marriage rooted in love, faith, and mutual devotion.
Throughout his life, David continued to learn and train while working, raising and supporting his wife and four children, and maintaining a strong Christian testimony. He was deeply involved in community outreach, personal service, and the fellowship of the Sault Ste. Marie Gospel Hall, where he faithfully supported preachers, missionaries, neighbours, and friends. His quiet strength, kind spirit, and consistent faith left a lasting example to all who knew him.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to all who offered their support throughout David’s health journey and homegoing — dear family members who travelled great distances to visit; friends, church families, and neighbours who brought comfort through prayer, conversation, memories, laughter, and apple fritters; and the many dedicated health professionals who provided exceptional care. Special thanks to the teams at Sault Area Hospital, Bayshore Home Health, CarePartners, Ontario Health at Home, Collegiate Heights, and the Algoma Residential Community Hospice (ARCH), as well as the Algoma District Cancer Program and palliative care support team.
Family and friends may gather for a visitation at Arthur Funeral Home - Barton & Kiteley Chapel (492 Wellington St. East; 705-759-2522) on Friday, November 7, 2025, from 11:00 am. to 12:00 pm. A Funeral Service celebrating David’s life will follow at 12:15 pm., with interment immediately after. A short time of reflection and hymn singing will take place at the graveside. Memorial donations (payable by cheque or online) to Algoma Residential Community Hospice (ARCH), A.C.T.S. (Mission Shipping), or MSC Canada would be appreciated. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.arthurfuneralhome.com
~Farther Along~
“Faithful till death,” said our loving Master,
“A few more days to labour and wait;
Toils of the road will then seem as nothing,
As we sweep through the beautiful gate.”
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
~ Ephesians 2:8–9 ~
