Today is August 12, 2019 and I have just found out about Paul’s passing and am overwhelmed with shock and sadness. I first met Paul in 1996/1997 in a  physics class at Western. The kinship  was instant,  profound and meaningful. .We reconnected again when we were both living in Toronto and he was immersed in, and loving being a part of opera Atelier.  After I moved away to Halifax in 2009 we kept in touch occasionally and I  took for granted that our paths would cross again at some future point. Paul exuded love, light and creativity.  I feel blessed to have known and been inspired by him. White family: please accept  my deepest condolences, even if a year late.

I first met Paul back in 2015 and we bonded right off the bat.  Although we lived cities apart, we still remained in contact. I am very saddened by his passing as I just found out this past weekend.

Very saddened to hear about Paul's untimely passing.  Mr. White was a great teacher who loved his job in the classroom and music room but more importantly, worked hard to make school a comfortable place for all students.  His absence will a big loss for many students, especially those that did not get to meet him. I wish the greatest of strengths to his family in this grieving period.

I was so saddened to hear of Paul's passing...too young, too soon to dampen such a bright light. I so much enjoyed working with Paul at Gibson. He always had that engaging  smile for us and a positive spin for every challenge. He brought music and joy to all of us and will be missed.

We are longtime friends of Barbara and Don. We have cherished memories of discussions with them at the family reunions near Mar, but unfortunately geography kept us from knowing the family better; it's a long way from Ottawa to the Sault. We were deeply saddened by Don's passing not long ago, and now to lose Paul as well is a cruel blow to the family. Our prayers go out especially to Barbara; it's impossible to find adequate words to convey our profound sympathy for this tragedy. The tremendous number of tributes that have poured in must be some comfort; Paul obviously touched a large number of hearts in his too-brief life.

Very sad to hear about losing Paul. He was a wonderful person who was caring and a genuine friend. He was so thoughtful, the type of person who would stay with you and do your dishes or bring you wine as a thank you. He made everything fun and lively. It’s amazing to read all the wonderful stories here. He will be missed very much.

We had the honour of having Mr. White as our teacher during our grade 5 and 6 years. We always remember how fun and wonderful he was; smiling and laughing with us, and connecting with us not only as a teacher, but as a friend. We both recall times when we were scared to do a presentation. Mr. White cheered us up and told us not to be scared and to just do it. Since then, we have never been afraid of public speaking. Mr. White was a great teacher who deeply cared for us. We will always cherish fond memories of the times we had together with Mr. White.

I was shocked and immensely saddened to hear of Paul’s passing. I am truly at a loss for words but want you to know, as many others have already expressed, what a special person Paul was. He embodied kindness and joy making him such an amazing teacher and friend.  Paul brought a much needed spark to TPS. His many talents were shared and appreciated by staff and students. It is rare to find someone with as much passion for life and teaching as Paul. I enjoyed our many pep talks and silly interactions. You could always count on Paul to help you out or cheer you up when you were down. I will miss his presence and friendship at TPS. My deepest condolences to the White family.  My memories of Paul and I go way back to the earliest days of elementary school, and he was one of the kindest souls a person could know.  
We shared a love for music and both played the trumpet in the band, and as young kids, nothing was cooler than sharing your home backyard with the schoolyard.  He had a good sense of humour and he genuinely cared about all of his friends .
May the way Paul lived and brought joy to others fill your hearts in the tough days ahead.  He will be missed dearly.

I will always remember my first encounter with him at J.A.Gibson School. He was supply teaching one day for the music program & I took a group of special education students down for their weekly music class. Immediately, I was so impressed with the respect & kindness (as well as profound insight) he showed the students & the class was an instant success as a result of his gifts. Later, I went to the principal & said "you've got to hire this guy!"

Please accept my sincerest and heartfelt condolences regarding Paul's passing. 

I was fortunate to have been a roommate with Paul and Rob for nearly two years on Heath street. We didn't hang out a whole lot because Paul was constantly on the move whether it be teaching, dance, music, and exercising, etc. 

He simply didn't stop and I admired that about him. Paul was very intelligent and he had a real way of communicating and connecting with people, and he had an amazing group of friends. The many wonderful messages is a clear testament that Paul touched many lives in a positive way, and I was certain he was an amazing teacher along with being a really nice person. 

Paul was a kind soul that passed far too soon but he put in a full shift. May you see and hear him in your hearts, through the many good times, music, song, and dance you likely shared with him.

I am so saddened to hear of Paul's passing. Paul and I collaborated when he was teaching music at Gibson. Paul would allow the Maple music program to bring concerts to Gibson and enjoyed coming over to us at the high school for collaboration. Paul was a champion of arts education and was well respected by his students, colleagues and friends. He will be missed. The education system and many students' lives are better because of Paul.

My family would like to express our condolences as we are saddened to hear of Paul’s passing.  From all of us in the Harris family, Paul was an exceptional teacher at JA Gibson and we were fortunate to have all three of our children in his classes.  I do have one vivid memory of a conversation with Paul as he acknowledged our full family involvement in sports and suggested adding some musical instruments into the household.  I understood his meaning that all children need to explore many pathways and we should actively encourage their interests.  So during the year that followed, a nice set of drums and two guitars with various learning books were added to our household to allow music to be played at home after school.  I’d still like to learn to  play guitar and will move it up on my bucket list in your memory. 
In reading others memories it’s clear that Paul touched us all in very personal ways and shared his kindness and thoughtfulness with so many.

We came back from holidays and were shocked to hear of Paul's passing.  Our Willowgrove family seems to be getting smaller. Paul was very talented and enjoyed listening to him at church when he performed. I remember when Paul was practicing before a service that Sarah was mimicking him when I was getting things ready for Sunday school. I was so embarrassed for what she was doing Paul just laughed at her and said it was ok. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this dificult time.

My Deepest Condolences to the White family. Mr. White was my grade 4 teacher at Gibson and he was my most memorable elementary school teacher. He always made coming to school such a pleasure and I had always had fun in his class. He was always supportive of me and  all his students. I remeber him setting up a pen pal program for his students in Canada and Korea and I still have that letter to this day. The lessons and memories he gave me are unforgettable and he made me who am I today. We will miss you. 

To Mrs. White and family:  My sincerest condolences on the untimely passing of your son, brother and uncle, Paul.    Both of my children, who are now 19 and 21, were fortunate to have the amazingly talented Paul as a teacher for many subjects while they were students at Joseph A Gibson Public School.   Paul taught outside the box and really focused on the individual learning style of each of his students- he was also looking for creative, fun ways to teach his lessons.   He not only nurtured his students academically but was also concerned about their emotional and social well being and helped them solve problems outside the classroom.  As a parent volunteer in the school and in his classroom,  I spent a lot of time with Paul- he was an integral part of our school community- enthusiastic, friendly and welcoming.  His sense of humour could brighten anyone's day. When he left the school to move onto Thornhill Public School, several parents and students were crying- we missed him so much.  My sons and their friends still talk about what a great teacher Paul was. I cannot imagine what you are all going through right now, but I hope knowing how admired and loved Paul  was by many of us at Gibson brings you some comfort.

Dear White Family, 
Too often we mean to show our appreciation to someone and we never get around to doing it until it is too late.  This is one of those times.  Mr. White taught both my children at Gibson PS and was especially instrumental in guiding my son.  When another teacher thought my son had  ADHD, Mr. White assured us that our son was a perfectly normal boy and there was nothing wrong with him.  He had no problem teaching my son who would stand and move around in the classroom.  He said he didn't care as long as he was learning.  Today, my son is finishing up his BSC in Biotechnology and has been in the top 10% of his class for the last 4 years;  he is now planning to do his Masters.  
I am not sure that Mr. White knows how many lives he touched so positively but I hope that we can give you, his family, some comfort that even though his time with us was short, he made such an incredible impact on many.  I know that Mr. White is now in the hands of a loving, caring God who welcomed this angel into his fold.  
Mr. White,  God Bless and rest in peace.  Thank you for the valuable lessons you taught all of us.  Condolences to the family as they mourn this terrible loss. 

I am so saddened hear of Paul's untimely death. He was indeed a bright light during his studies at Western (UWO) - and a regular visitor to the Music Library. Thoughtful, funny, caring, and quite simply a delightful human being. 

I am thankful to have known Paul, albeit briefly, and thankful to his family for posting so many wonderful photos of your talented son/brother/uncle.

I lost touch with Paul in our adult years but have many fond memories of when we were young lads in elementary school. Including his often anticipated, over the top birthday parties. I rowed and coached with Paul at UWO;  he was a gem!!!   I had a really fun time there, and so much of that was because of Paul.  After rowing varsity together, we coached: We had so much fun  coaching the UWO novice men.  

A year or so after I'd left London, Paul was still there, and I needed to find a place to stay because I was taking a course at the Faculty of Ed at UWO.  Paul happily offered me a place to stay and wouldn't accept any money for it.  I stayed for a month-- we had many good conversations and good laughs as we always did/would when hanging out!

I'm a Buddhist and believe in rebirth, so although I'm pretty darned sad to hear he's passed, I know if what Buddhism claims is true, he's heading in a good direction cause he was such a nice/funny/good person.

P.S. I sent him an invitation to go hiking last week-- which you'll surely find on his phone.  The last time we literally spoke-- I think in May-- he said he'd like to join me when next I headed for the Adirondacks.

As an accomplished musician and teacher, Paul was a natural to act as the bass section lead. Many of us had the pleasure of getting to know Paul personally, whether it was at a choir social event or a chat at rehearsal.  Paul often led the choir in a sight-singing workshop or a pre concert warm-up; he was always there to help.

Paul will be greatly missed by the members of the Toronto Choral Society, but he will always be remembered for his presence and contributions.

I’m writing to express my sadness and to offer my sincere condolences in your time of loss.  I heard the sad news from my sister, who taught alongside Paul and also shared a friendship with him.  Even though Paul and I were not the closest of friends, I felt a certain kinship with him through our many shared interests.  Indeed our lives seemed to intersect in so many ways that we would laugh about how we seemed to have lived parallel lives.  We were both born the same year and grew up in Northern Ontario cities.  We both discovered a love of music as trumpet players in high school.  We both eventually went on to study music in university, but now as opera singers, and would both continue to perform professionally in Toronto.  We were also both on the Varsity Rowing Team during our university years: Paul at Western and me at McGill.  Paul and I raced against each other on the water many times during those years, but we would eventually find ourselves on the same team when we shared the stage for a performance of Carmen with Opera York.  Paul was a gracious competitor on the water, and a generous colleague on stage.  I can certainly bear witness to the great deal of enjoyment that he took from our shared interests.  Regardless of the endeavour, Paul brought happiness to all around him.  He will most certainly be missed.

My deepest condolences to the entire White family, I cannot imagine the grief you are feeling. 

I had the privilege of singing with Paul in the Toronto Choral Society, so I'm one of many people he befriended there. What a friendly, open person - he always had a smile and a kind word to say. Sometimes we'd be chit-chatting on the subway ride home, and I was always touched by his thoughtful questions and the details he remembered about my life (even if I missed a season or two). More recently, he'd been VERY keen to grill me for info about my job on Star Trek, so we had fun discussing the non-secret details!

I am very sorry I can't make it up to Sault Ste Marie for his funeral  - I'm sure the entire choir would be there if it was in Toronto. He's made quite a mark - the TCS will truly not be the same without him. His voice, enthusiasm, generous spirit, and sunny personality will be sorely missed. 




I have such fond and fun memories of Paul from our days at Bawating high school.  Paul was one of the first persons I befriended after arriving here from Finland (I swear, he only made fun of my accent a few times!).  Perhaps it helped that we were also both PK’s (pastor’s kids).  We both shared a love of sports, and managed to compete with (and against) each other in pretty much every sport imaginable (including ping pong in his basement).  One of my fondest memories is having nerf gun battles in his basement with Andy and Armin, or going skiing at Heyden, or snorkeling at Gros Cap, or (the list goes on and on).  Paul was always such a positive person and ready to have fun (a perfect accompaniment to my somewhat gloomier Scandinavian disposition).  It was very shocking and heartbreaking to hear of his passing.  I feel so lucky and blessed to have known him.  My deepest sympathy to the whole family.

My name is Daniel Bechard and I am the head coach of the men’s rowing team at Western.  On behalf of the entire team, past and present, we are heart broken with you. Paul was an amazing person in his skills, interests, talents and the way he interacted with others.  His personality was absolutely contagious.  He was my first coach when I arrived at western in 1999 and must say that he was responsible for many of us staying in the sport and contributing to the next generation. He understood that the social part of sport was just as important as the hard work it took to realize your dreams.  The Western Rowing family finds strength in the legacy that people like Paul leave behind. His legacy will certainly not be forgotten. We will always remember Paul. 

I had the pleasure of being in Mr. White's class for both grades 4 and 5. But I knew him since I had started at Gibson. I will always remember in kindergarten when he would pull me out of class to teach me ballet. He was one of my favourite teachers and some of my greatest memories of Gibson involve Mr. White. He always took the time to help me through any difficult times I was having. My deepest condolences to his friends and family.

I am a member of the Toronto Choral Society and over the past few years, I had the opportunity to both sing and get to know Paul.  We often took the subway home together after rehearsals on Wednesday evenings.  

I am truly sorry to learn of his death and please accept my heartfelt condolences.  Paul loved music and took his role as the bass section lead seriously and with a dedication to the beauty of music.  I will miss him.

My condolences to Mr. White's family.  Mr. White was a part of the heart and soul of Gibson and I had the pleasure of being a student of his in grade 4 and 5.  Just seeing him in the halls made my day brighter.  We connected through our love of ballet.  I will miss his animated character and I will never forget about the time he read "James and the Giant Peach" in funny, entertaining voices.  He also took care of me once when I got injured at school.  There is not enough room to write about all the memories I have with him.  He was not just a teacher to me, but also a friend and as I am about to start my first year of university, I will always cherish the memories I made with him in elementary school.

There are no words to express my sorrow for this loss to Paul's entire family and all his friends .  Both my children had the wonderful  privilege to have Paul as their teacher for grade 4 and grade 5 at Gibson.  I was a parent volunteer there for 10 years so I knew him for the 8 years that he was at Gibson.  I spent much time in the school and Paul would practice his Italian with me.  He and I had so many wonderful conversations about so many things that it would be impossible to fully express them here.  I had a tremendous amount of respect for him as a teacher and as a person.  My heart aches.  It was a privilege to have Paul as such an exceptional role model and tremendous positive influence on my children and on our family.

Below is a picture from 2006.  Paul made me take a picture of him when I was struggling with a new digital camera and after teasing my limited tech skill, he wanted proof that I could use it.

Paul was Papageno and I was Pamina!   We had so much fun in The Magic Flute and learning in the same studio, telling ghost stories in a car full coming home from  a cottage studio party, singing at the Opera Workshop in St. Andrews, NB and he even made and brought me homemade chicken soup when I was sick in undergrad.  His smile says it all!!  Such a good hearted person!!  Heaven is full of some awesome people!!  I know he will be singing away up there with the angels!!!!  I’m so sorry for your loss but I like to think that the singing just got a little bit better up there!!  God bless!!

Paul was a member and the bass section lead in the choir I sing in, The Toronto Choral Society.  He was a wonderful asset to the choir, always ready to give of his time and talents, and a really great guy to chat with.  I shall miss seeing his friendly face every week at choir.  God Speed Paul.   

We did not know Paul personally, but as I read through the many condolences it is clear he was a well respected and loved man to so many, and very talented, which he willingly shared with others.

Words cannot  convey how saddened I am to hear of Paul’s passing. My heart is heavy.  I worked with Paul at Joseph A. Gibson P.S.   He was the first person to welcome me to the school.  He was as genuine as they come.  I recall the many heartfelt chats where he always offered me words of encouragment when I felt down; or the many laughs we shared on lunches, field trips and at events outside the school.  I can still hear his hearty laugh.  He was a caring and compassionate teacher, and person. He was a true friend.     I will really miss him.

We lost touch recently the past few years, and although I only knew Paul for a short while from teaching in China together, we became fast friends when we got back.

I am sure that so much will be said about Paul but I will try to add my own spin.

I saw so much love and joy from Paul.  I saw in Paul what I wanted to see for myself but I was never jealous but marveled in how he could live his life so freely.  Paul was wild, free, loved to entertain, laugh and enjoy life.  He was a man of many talents and passion.  He could bring people together.  Paul reminded me of some of the joys of teaching and to really care for people and how to show it.

I am sad that we lost in touch these last few years and I wish I could have been there more for him.  

One fond memory is when Paul organized a photo of him and some new friends in an arrangement spelling my name.  I was vacationing without them and it made me miss them very much.  

Sometimes a true testament to somebody is the amount of pain we feel when we have lost them.  But I would rather be glad and happy to remember the sheer amount of joy he created and shared.

I hope you knew how much you meant to me.  

 I  worked with  Paul every week at Toronto Choral Society and we'd often chat before rehearsal or during the break.  He was a talented, caring man, always  considerate of others.  I never dreamed that  our concert this past May, which was such a fun and joyous event,  would be the last time we'd perform together.  My deepest sympathy to the White family.

My deepest condolences!
I was deeply saddened to hear of Paul’s death! 
It has been many years since I crossed paths with Paul. I have many fond memories of the whole White family and Johnston family spending time together. My most vivid memories of Paul are of him as a baby when my mom (Gladys) would babysit him and I would get to help her care for and play with Paul! He made such an impression on me that I actually asked my mother for a baby brother.  Mom told me no, that I would just have to enjoy Paul. 
I’m so sorry for your loss!


Mr. White was my elementary school teacher. He was always light hearted and goofy and he knew how to get along with all of us. He understood the students better than many teachers I've had. Mr. White and I were asked to play music for a heartbreaking occasion and I had felt broken and was crying. I fondly remember him sitting me down and offering his words of encouragement. He had said something along the lines of: 

"Even if you're sad and you feel weak, there are times you're going to have to be stronger for someone else's sake. This is one of those times. Convey your emotion through the music, people will understand it better than through your tears." 

I've held these words close to heart since that day and continue to live by them today. Thank you Mr. White for your brightness and wisdom and my condolences to his loved ones.
