MINERS, Rita Mary – Rita peacefully, on Monday, October 18, 2010 at Extendicare Van Daele, joins her husband Nelson, sister Isobel Smit (Frank), brothers Bernie (Marie), Leonard (Julie), Andy, Ernie (Rolande), Earl and special younger brother George Duern. As she comes in last in this family race, what a reunion they will have! It is with extreme sadness and reluctance that we, her children, let our wonderful mother go, Rick Thomas (Pat), Sue Bond (James), Glen Thomas (Diane) and Sandra Flumian (Anthony). Loving and devoted Grandmother of Dave Stokes, Samantha Turmaine, Marc Anthony and Michael Flumian. Rita leaves behind “hugs” for her sisters-in-law Irma Duern (Earl), Sophie Stuart (Andy) and Shirley Duern (George), as well as many nieces and nephews, including Fran O’Grady (Paul) and the late Isabelle Hilton (John). Her exceptional “extended family” at Extendicare Van Daele, no doubt will miss her smile, her cheerful humming in the halls and her laughter sometimes to the point of tears. She could not have been in better hands and we will be forever grateful to these amazing people. We greatly appreciate the care and compassion of Dr. Kargbo, Dr. Malone and the 2nd floor staff of the General Hospital during Mum’s short stay, but nothing compares to “going home” to be surrounded by family. No funeral services will be held, however we have chosen two organizations that we feel were closest to Mum’s heart for memorial contributions, The Alzheimer Society of Algoma and the Extendicare Van Daele Residents Council, as she would want residents and family at her last home to benefit. Our mother/grandmother/friend left us much in the same way she lived and will always be remembered by those that knew and loved her, with much grace, light and beauty.
