We are sad to announce our mother, Melanie "Mel" has passed away after a long battle with Cancer at the age of 64. We are comforted knowing that she has joined our Dad, her husband and soulmate Doug Baker. Mother of Robin (Brad), Lottie (Kevin), Dexter (Amber) and Meagan. Grammie of Frazer, Maddy, Cailey, Cole, Charlie, Cody, Talin, Wesson and Jaxen. Daughter of the late George and Sheila Haldenby and Daughter-in-law of Ralph and Helen Baker. Sister of Phillip (Iris), Griffis (Susan), Cindy (late Emerson), Ruth-Anne (Claude). Sister-in-law of Lynne (Phil) and the late Jeff (Cathy).
Mom grew up in Sylvan Valley and married our Dad there. She raised 3 kids on her parents homestead, surrounded by family, it was a special place to her grandkids as well. In her younger years, mom enjoyed painting landscapes and wildlife, especially on saw blades. Many in the community commissioned pieces from her. She also enjoyed the family ceramic shop and was an expert at knitting.
Everyone had mittens, socks or a hat from her at some point. Childhood memories include the clinking of her knitting needles and the smell of her black earl grey tea. When her first grandkid arrived she jumped into scrapbooking and documented many family memories. When she wasn't crafting, she was camping or snowmobiling with a large group of family friends.
After our Dad passed away, the grief she felt was enormous, her health was eventually failing and she made her way to A.R.C.H. Her last few weeks were surrounded by visitors, and was doted on by the staff. We are forever grateful for the care they provided to our mother.
As per Mel's request, cremation has taken place and she will be laid to rest beside her husband at the Sylvan Valley Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations (made payable by cheque or online to) A.R.C.H. would be greatly appreciated by the family. Arrangements entrusted to Arthur Funeral Home - Barton & Kiteley Chapel (492 Wellington St. E. - 705=759-2522).
