It is with heavy hearts that the family announces the passing of “Wally” at the age of 73.
He was son to the late Walter and Ethel Hammerstedt. Son-in-law of the late Wray and Eunice Adam. Much loved husband of Bonnie Hammerstedt for over 44 years. Proud father of Marion (Ryan) and Bobby. Eldest brother of Ann (Reg), Lois, Dave (Debra), Marilyn (Tom), Eric (Dirinda), Late Shelley (Mike), Iris (Peter), Sandra (John) and Carl (Eleanor). Brother-in-law to Jo-Anne (Bob), Late Bill (Gloria), Peg (Dave), Deed (Carl), Doug (Julie), and Bear. Adored Uncle to many nieces and nephews, friend and colleague to many.
Wally was a long-time curler and volunteer at Tarentorus Sports Club, where he spent time with many friends and family. Known for curling in his blue jeans and throwing his “Wally- Weight” takeouts. He enjoyed over 15 years of retirement from Great Lakes Power, where he finished his career as a Senior System Operator. He met countless friends along the way whom he spoke very fondly of. Wally loved food and his homemade work lunches were usually big enough they could feed Andre the Giant. An intelligent man with a quiet confidence, there was no project or problem he seemingly couldn’t fix himself, and took on many projects over the years, especially with his loving wife Bonnie.
Wally had a quick wit and was known for his dry sense of humour, classic one-liners, and cheesy dad jokes. Incredibly selfless, he would drop everything to help and never expect anything in return, especially when it came to his children. Always kind and extremely calm, Wally never seemed to sweat the small stuff.
Special Thank you to Nurse Berlyn, and the nursing staff and doctors in the emergency department of Sault Area Hospital for their care and compassion.
As per Wally’s request, a Celebration of Life will take place at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to Arthur Funeral Home – Barton & Kiteley Chapel (492 Wellington Street E., 705-759-2522). In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated by the family. Please visit www.arthurfuneralhome.co obituaries section to leave a message of condolence as a keepsake for the family.
