She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Burney E. Burgstiner, Sr., infant son, sisters Dorothy Allen, Kathryn deVegter, Jackie Lynes and Jimmie Lair. The Hendry girls are together again.
She was born in Waycross, Ga and moved to Savannah in her early childhood. She and her sisters spent many youthful days in Forsyth Park.
As a young teen she was a soda jerk at Croskin’s Pharmacy at Park Ave & Bull. Mr. Croskin once had to remind her not to put so much ice cream in the sundaes. Such was her generous nature.
She and her sisters were faithful supporters of the World War II servicemen who frequented the nearby American Legion Post. Jean especially enjoyed beating them at Chinese checkers. She often reminisced how some of those same serviceman never returned from the war.
She worked as a secretary at Trailways and met her future husband who drove a bus. Interoffice romance was against company policy so Jean decided to quit her job, marry Mr. Burgstiner and start a family. Church was a cornerstone of their lives as the children were raised to each find saving grace in Jesus Christ. An eternal gift that they now offer as an inheritance to their children.
Among her many passions in life were babies, dancing, music, cooking and praying. She had a ministry of encouragement to others through her gift of writing and sending cards and letters. She nurtured each grandchild individually and instilled a sense of love and value in them.
Surviving are her children: Elarbee (E.B.) (Terri) Burgstiner, Jr., Dot Christie, Donna Burgstiner, Joy Brown, and George Burgstiner. She had 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren who adored their Mema Jean.
