My partner, Morris, and I met Dolores in the mid-1980's when we were assisting her son, Randy Quinn, deal with a terminal illness. Both were very tight-lipped about their early years.

We did learn that she worked for the Children's Aid. She and a partner, possibly a brother, adopted two boys of which Randy was the younger. They lived around Greenwood and Danforth and the boys were mesmerised by the subway being built at that time.

By the time we met them, Randy and Dolores were alone. Sadly Randy died in 1988.

Morris and I stayed in touch with Dolores, occasionally taking her to lunch at Swiss Chalet, her favourite restaurant at the time.  Morris would phone her regularly and they had long conversations about the foibles of the Leafs and Blue Jays. There was a lot of laughter as they chatted away.

Morris and I retired to Vancouver in 2006 but the phone calls continued and we stayed in touch with Christmas, Easter and birthday cards. On our visits to Toronto we would  take Dolores to Duckworth Fish and Chips at Danforth and Main.

On road trips around British Columbia, we would send Dolores post cards from various small towns and historic sites. She was always surprised at some of our travels. She once said she would like to visit Peggy's Cove in Nova Scotia. Unfortunately, she never made it.

Morris, by now my husband, died in 2022. I continued the post cards and telephone calls with Dolores but her heart didn't seem to be in the conversations (Morris was a great conversationalist).

I became concerned about Dolores when she didn't answer several phone calls. I contacted Toronto Community Housing security and they were kind enough to direct me to Michael Garron Hospital, which directed me to Dolores at the Atrium at Kew Gardens.

I am grateful to Atrium staff which connected me with Dolores for a brief conversation, just days before she died.

Rest easy, my friend, rest easy.
