Surrounded by her children and grandsons, she took her last breath and left us to be with the rest of her family who were waiting for her with a rum and diet coke at at the Legion in the sky.
Devoted wife to husband Louis (predeceased) and loving daughter to John and Mary, sister to Jack, Ronnie and May.(all predeceased) and sister in law Gizi in Hungary.
Loving, generous and caring mum to Steven (Heidi) and Stacey and wonderful nana to Tyler and Brett and grand-dogs Chase and Laszlo.
Betty immigrated to Canada from Dalry, Scotland in 1959 to join her father and brothers. Soon afterwards, the rest of the family joined them. Quickly finding a job, she soon settled in and made Toronto her home.
As a typical 19 year old at the time, she enjoyed going to dances with her family and friends and it was at one of these dances she would meet the love of her life - Louis - he himself an immigrant; from Hungary.
After a few years of dating and dancing, they eventually married and had 2 children. They found a house in Scarborough, and made it their home, in which they lived until their deaths. Our home was always filled with people. Friends dropping by, relatives staying from abroad, family dinners and gatherings for the holidays, and many, many house parties throughout the years, all of which our mum would always cook. She loved cooking, and even though Scottish, she learned to cook Hungarian cuisine for our father.
Our mum was always a constant anchor in our lives. She stayed home to raise us - our father worked several jobs in order for her to do so. She was always there for us, as children and as adults. Seeing us through some trying times in our own lives. Not having her in our lives now leaves a big void which will never be filled. She was also a devoted wife, especially when Louis had a series of strokes, she faithfully visited him in the nursing home every single day and was with him as he took his last breath. She selflessly took care of her younger sister when she became ill 2 years ago, as well as supporting her mother and brothers during their illnesses over the years.
As children, she enjoyed traveling on our yearly family trips to various destinations in the U.S as well as trips to New York City, Hungary and Scotland. But her favourite destination was the Gulf Coast of Florida. She loved the warm weather, sitting on the beach and shopping. She was able to share her love of Florida with her grandsons, who grew up going on yearly trips with her there, most recently a year ago.
Our mum was a proud woman. Proud of her Scottish heritage, her home, her children and grandsons. She was well dressed, often with an item of pink, which was her signature colour. She enjoyed being in her garden, which would always have pink flowers in it, that she always received for mothers day and her birthday, which were just at the right time for spring planting. She was quick witted and was up on current events and trends, faithfully read the daily paper, the weekly flyers, the Scottish paper, doing her word search and looked forward to receiving her Hello and People magazine subscriptions every week and of course watching decorating shows and Hallmark movies. Betty enjoyed her weekly coffee get togethers with her friends on a Tuesday, and in years past, movie nights and going to the CNE concerts with neighbours. She was a fixture in her neighbourhood, well known and liked by all, often having long chats with people on her front porch or garage.
We are so grateful to have had our mother in our lives as long as we had, and will cherish the times we were together. We couldn't have asked for a better mother and nana. She will be missed and thought of every single day. We love you mum.
In honour of our mother, please wear a token of pink if you are attending either the visitation and or funeral.
