Grace Margaret MacGillivray (nee Barber) died on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, after a lengthy illness at age 99. She lived a rich and joyful life as a committed follower of Jesus, and as wife to John, a Presbyterian minister. They both served over 47 years in ministry, primarily at Wexford Presbyterian Church. Mom was also an endeared Kindergarten teacher whose pupils would often ask if she too, could be their mothers! Grace is survived by her four children: Jane, Cathy, John-David (Patricia) and Sheldon (Alissa).
Nick-named, Amazing Grace she was also a beloved Grandmother to Jennifer (Mark) Richard, Claire (Zach), Anna, Christian, Ashleigh, Andrew, Sydney and Stephanie. She also loved her role as great Grandmother to Phoenix, London, Mikai, plus Darby, Delta and newcomer, Daphne. Grace was fierce in her love for each of them which is why they and all her children were always clustered around every summer at the family cottage on Lake Muskoka.
Grace was fortunate to spend 33 winters after retirement in Boca Raton, Florida where she was close to sisters Madeline Fales and Ruth (Pat) Maloney. It was a gathering place for other siblings including Howard Barber, Doris Beveridge and Betty Cameron. Her legacy in Boca included many dear and abiding friendships forged over Bingo, Scrabble and card games, when she was often pronounced, the winner!
Mom was an avid musician, even though untrained, and she taught herself how to play the piano. One of her greatest pastimes was going to the symphony or theatre. In the weeks before her death, when asked what she would most like to do, it was to ‘swim in the lake’ one more time!
We are indebted to the PSWs who cared for Mom so tenderly at Grace’s home in the Beach, and to the staff at Providence Villa. A private burial will be held on Tuesday, April 2 at Pine Hills Cemetery, followed this summer by a memorial tribute. Donations on Mom’s behalf can be made to the Canadian Bible Society.
