Bill was the beloved husband of the late Joyce Howlett (deceased March 2010) for 54 wonderful years. He was the loving father of Stephen (deceased Feb 1989) and Sandra (Brian), and adored grandfather to Shaun (Megan) and Jenna.
Bill was born and raised in Aylesbury, England with his younger sister Eileen. Like most young boys during W.W.II. school was finished at an early age – 14. Following a short period of work Bill enlisted in the British Army on Sept 14, 1946 and served in the Grenadier Guards until his release in 1952. During much of that period he was stationed in Tripoli, North Africa. He also served with the Regiment as a guard at Windsor Castle. Upon his release he joined the London Police Force as a London bobby.
Bill remained with the London Police Force until April 1957, when Bill and Joyce, the love of his life, made the bold decision to emigrate to Canada. Arriving in Toronto Bill subsequently joined the Toronto Police Force and served until his retirement, having completed 30 years on the force. The last 12 years he was the Sergeant at the Toronto Island Station.
Family was most important to Bill. He was a giving, kind and generous soul. In addition, charities were most grateful for the many donations made to multiple organizations in the Toronto area. He would often say, “What goes around, comes around”.
For the past 5 years Bill was a resident of Fieldstone Commons. Having retained his crystal-clear mind right up to the end, he was always able to engage with the wonderful staff of the home. They often noted that in spite of his age, he still retained his great sense of humor and quick wit. He was known as a true gentleman. Many thanks to the staff for providing Bill with outstanding care and support.
A private celebration of Bill’s life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers a donation to CAMH (camh.ca) would be greatly appreciated by the family.
