Born in Springfield, Massachusetts on October 6, 1935 to the late Marjorie (Grant) and Carl Smith, Eunice was an alumna of Mount Holyoke College and Russell Sage College, and additionally received a masters degree from Middlebury College. She wrote articles and translated books for The Hispanic Society of America before shifting to work as a travel agent.
Over a half-century, Eunice was an officer or active participant in many local organizations, including the East Scarsdale Association, the Scarsdale Woman’s Club, the Senior Council, and the Interfaith Council, and was a member of the Scarsdale Congregational Church and an attender of the Scarsdale Friends Meeting.
She is survived by her daughter Susan Maes (Bob Maes) and grandchildren Peter, Robert and Sarah Maes of Brielle, New Jersey, her son Paul Beyersdorf (Sue Beyersdorf) and granddaughter Kate Beyersdorf of Manhattan, stepdaughter Catherine Laughlin of Rockville, Maryland, stepdaughter Frances Tucker (Bill Tucker) of Portland, Oregon and stepgrandsons Alexander, Nicholas and Seth Tucker, and stepdaughter Janet Laughlin of Dallas, Texas, and stepgranddaughters Kathy and Barbara Babcock.
Eunice loved sailing, history, good music, and good theater. She was a tireless travel enthusiast and spirited conversationalist, reader of the New Yorker and the Times, lover of a good value who scoured the Scarsdale Inquirer for articles of interest to share with her friends, and a devoted friend whose smile filled our hearts. All who knew her felt valued as a friend.
A celebration of her life will be held October 4 at 11 a.m. at the Scarsdale Congregational Church, 1 Heathcote Road. Donations in her memory may be made to the John Laughlin Research Fund at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
