It's with sad regrets that I hear the news of the passing of Mrs. Mitchell. I have fond memories of my experiences in her class in the fourth grade. Public School 189 in Washington Heights in 1983-84 class 4-401. I enjoyed her Sense of humor and character. She was a fine example of an educator and a role model. She will be deeply missed. My deepest condolences to her family and friends. I take only good memories of her with me.

My sincere condolences to the family. 
Ms. Mitchell as I knew her and lovingly called her, was one of my favorite teachers and made an enormous impact in my life. She always believed in me and gave me such encouragement. She was my 5th grade teacher at P.S. 189. She taught me to sew  a small pillow a skill I still use. Her smile could warm any room and her cheerful disposition and demeanor kept all of her students fully engaged  in the learning process. After having a miserable 4th grade year with a terrible teacher Ms. Mitchell helped me to love learning again. I am quite saddened to learn of her passing however I know that her immense generosity and kindness as well as the lessons will continue to live on in the lives of everyone who has the luck of being her student colleague friend and especially her loved ones.

Ms. Mitchell was my 5th grade teacher at PS 189 in 1994. I had only been in the country for about 4 years so my accent was very thick. Ms. Mitchell made me feel very confident and loved. She never made me feel self-conscious and in fact, motivated to keep practicing. Ms. Mitchell, thank you for being the best teacher ever. Your kindness made a huge impact in my life. Rest in Peace.

Iris Mitchell was an extraordinary teacher. I had the honor to work with her early in my career. She always worked hard to provide a sound educational setting for her students and she shared that magic with me. I, in turn, incorporated that magic in my own classroom.

Dear Amy and Mark - Your mom was a very special woman - Her beauty and joyfulness shined - I am in shock - so sorry for you all.

My darling Iris,
Throughout the fifty-five years we were friends, you retained the same outsized personality I met on my first day of teaching in Brownsville. 
Your boisterous laugh, your effusive hugs and compliments, the Brooklyn/Jewish intonation of your roots, the onslaught of gifts, and your unflinching support for Israel. Thankfully, these attributes that defined you were never shed and accompanied you throughout your exceptional life. They were there when I moved out of my parent’s house to the same building you lived in with your children. They escorted you to the many second-night Passover seders that you attended in my home and made each one fun and memorable, and you brought them to my children’s weddings and to the funerals of my parents.
Thank you for a lifetime of exuberant friendship.

This was at a friend’s wedding. It was the first time I had seen Ms Mitchell since graduating the 5th grade in 1991. She was my 4th and 5th grade teacher.  I was lucky enough to be in her last class as a 4th grade teacher and her first class as a 5th grade teacher.  
Over that summer she gave a summer assignment of 4 book reports which were due the first day back from summer vacation. She was the absolute best. 
          I wasn’t sure if she’d remember who I was when I saw her this day. I went up to her and asked her if her name is Iris Mitchell, she replied yes. I then told her that I was one of her students and I told her my name. She immediately yelled, “MAXI!!?” I nodded yes and she gave me the biggest hug ever.  I later find out that my younger cousin and the bride and groom were also her students. WOW. Ms Mitchell taught me the meaning of wanting to learn and taught me that having homework everyday is not that bad and I will be forever great full to her.

You were so radiant! Always bringing out the best of any situation. Always having a word of encouragement. Always giving your students the BEST of you. Always seeing the good in people. Always there for me. Always there for my girls. Always wanting to know how things were going for us. Always, always, always YOU. I will miss you Always…

She’d say to me, “We’re both adults now. You can call me Iris.” and I’d respond, “Sure, Ms. Mitchell.”

Ms. Mitchell, a wonderful teacher, colleague, and friend who touched so many lives. Grateful for the lessons, laughter, and kindness she shared. She will forever live in my heart.

Dear Amy and Mark,   
I spent the summer of 1981 with your Mother in London, during the engagement and marriage of Lady Diana to Prince Charles.   A festive  atmosphere and a wonderful opportunity  to begin an enduring friendship with your Mom.   Our overseas trip was followed by many visits  together and we always picked up right where we left off.   I treasure every memory and opportunity we had to be together.
