He graduated from Scarsdale High School and Colgate University. After college, he served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific for a year and then returned to New York City to lecture on naval officer recruitment programs.
In 1955, James married his sweetheart and spent a year at Harvard Business School. Eager to start his business career, he began to work for his wife's family's business, A.S. Beck Shoe Corporation. There, he developed and patented a process used to improve and reduce costs in the manufacturing of shoes. During his last six years at Beck Industries, he served as Vice President and Director of Real Estate. He later organized the real estate department for Carl Marx & Co., Inc. James concluded his career at Westfield Shopping Center as Vice President in charge of leasing in the Northeast.
James's passions included anything related to flying. A licensed pilot, he enjoyed flying his children and friends around, as well as building model airplanes for fun. Known for his warm smiles (except in photographs), his wild sense of humor, and his generous spirit, James brought joy to those around him. He cherished time with his family, and his kindness and humor touched many lives. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
James is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years, Carole; his sons, Jeff and Bob; his daughters-in-law, Maliwan and Francesca; his daughter Cathryn and son-in-law Jim; and his five grandchildren, Jack, Brian, Brynn, Jesse, and Dylan. A celebration of his life was held on Sunday, March 17th, where many friends and family gathered to say goodbye. His nephew John performed one of his original songs, "Hallelujah Bar," providing a heartfelt send-off. James's kindness, generosity, and love will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
"To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.
