John J. (Jack) Powers, 89, a beloved and influential figure in college basketball, passed away on February 27, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. A longtime resident of Eastchester and Montauk, NY, Jack’s life was defined by his unwavering devotion to Manhattan College, his contributions to athletics, and his passion for mentoring others. His boundless energy and deep convictions touched countless lives, from family and friends to the athletes he guided.
Raised in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx among a family of athletic brothers, Jack attended Manhattan Prep before embarking on a stellar two-sport career at Manhattan College in baseball and basketball. A 1958 graduate, he led the Jaspers to two NCAA Tournament appearances and an NIT berth, solidifying his legacy with a legendary 29-point, 15-rebound performance in an 89-84 NIT upset over Jerry West’s West Virginia team.
After a brief high school coaching stint, Jack returned to Manhattan in 1968. Over 10 seasons, he led the Jaspers to four NIT appearances, a 1973 ECAC Holiday Festival title, and a 142-114 record, with home games played at Madison Square Garden. As Director of Athletics, he oversaw major growth in both men’s and women’s programs while advocating tirelessly for student-athletes. His leadership extended beyond the court—mentoring, storytelling, and championing the success of others with an unwavering belief in their potential.
Jack served on the executive councils of the ECAC, IC4As, MAAC, Metropolitan Basketball Association, and Tri-State Soccer League. A key figure in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), he became Executive Director in 1988, overseeing operations and team selections until the NCAA took over in 2005.
A recipient of numerous honors, Jack was inducted into the Manhattan College Hall of Fame, Catholic High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame, and Brooklyn Old Timers Hall of Fame. In 2016, he became the first Manhattan athlete to have his number retired, and in 2025, he was nominated for the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
An adventurer at heart, Jack traveled the world with his family, but Montauk remained his sanctuary—a place where he could cast a fishing line and embrace the sea. A skilled fisherman, he found joy and peace on the water, sharing his passion with loved ones.
Jack didn’t just shape Manhattan College—he built a dynasty. His devotion to the school ran deep, with both of his children and all of his grandchildren proudly following in his footsteps as Jaspers, ensuring his legacy of passion, perseverance, and pride lives on.
Jack is survived by his wife Anita Powers (née DaRos), children John (Katherine) and Kimberly Powers-Gorich (George), grandchildren Allison and Sean Powers, Jack Gorich, brother James Powers (Dolly), and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Jack now joins a legendary basketball team in heaven, reuniting with dear friends: Bobby Knight, Lou Carnesecca, Jerry West, and coach, Ken Norton. Though his time on the court has come to a close, Jack Powers will forever be a champion—on the court, in his family, and in the hearts of all who knew him.
A visitation for John will be held Sunday, March 2, 2025 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Edwin L. Bennett Funeral Home, 824 Scarsdale Ave, Scarsdale, NY 10583. A funeral mass will occur Monday, March 3, 2025 from 10:30 AM to 11:15 AM at Immaculate Heart of Mary, 8 Carman Road, Scarsdale, NY 10583.
