Barbara grew up with her feet in the sand and her head under the waves of the Atlantic ocean and couldn’t imagine it any other way. Barbara Reider was a wife, daughter, sister, in law and aunt to a large and wonderful family. Barbara is left by her husband David Reider, her Mother and Father Helen and Larry Reider, her siblings Larry, Dan, Linda, Lori and Sandy, her inlaws the Sedmaks and Udens of Melbourne Australia, 13 nieces and nephews, and “Da Boyz”, Dallas & Byron. She has many really really good friends who have helped with caregiving in ways that made Barbara full of gratitude.
Barbara was brought up with a strong sense of ethics which has carried her through her professional life. Barbara was scientific at a very young age. She questioned and analyzed everything. “How?” and “Why?” were frequently asked. Authority without logic was never taken at face value, and respect had to be earned. While no one is perfect, Barbara’s career ended up in the area of Radiation Protection, where she was Certified and quite a good troubleshooter. She always said she got this from her Dad, Laurence Reider, former VP of Engineering for Cosentini Associates of NY.
Barbara’s passions were her hobbies. There was never enough time in the week for everything. She was an avid windsurfer and as the bell tolls has 5 windsurfers, innumerable sails, and a landsailer in the garage. Barbara was a skier as well. She loved to read novels and to travel around the world. Barbara also studied printmaking in college and continued on with this when she moved to CT and MA. Barbara was working on her PhD in Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology when she was diagnosed with lung cancer and had to discontinue this activity. The UMass Lowell Physics/Rad Safety department has been so supportive and is fondly remembered.
