Daniel D. Johnson of Scituate, formerly of Dedham and Brookline, beloved and devoted husband of Merilyn (McDonald) Johnson, passed away peacefully after a long, determined and courageous battle with cancer on July 19, 2021. We trust he is now at peace and free of pain and suffering.
Daniel, who was variously known as Dan, Denny and Dennis by his friends and family, was a fighter all of his life. During his heroic service in Vietnam as an Army Infantryman in the 27th Infantry Division, he was severely wounded and was awarded a Purple Heart and Silver Star for gallantry in action. He was a lifetime member of the DAV and a Wolfhound till the end.
After recovering from his wounds, he returned to college and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology and History from Curry College. He later completed his education receiving a Health Care Management MBA from the Heller School at Brandeis University. He filled his life with books and was always reading at least one.
Daniel was the brother-in-law of Barbara and David Culver of Eastham, MA, Marybeth and Joseph Catinella of Scituate, MA and Michael and Alexandra McDonald of Hull, MA.
He was the loving uncle of Joseph Catinella, Sarah Culver, Lauren Bellamente, Lindsey Hannon, and Max, Nicholas, and Meghan McDonald, and great uncle of Joanna Hannon. He also leaves behind loving cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, Daniel and Alice (Dow) Johnson.
As brave and strong as Daniel was, he had a soft side. He loved and was kind to all animals, particularly his dogs, Bogart and Allie, who are waiting for him over the Rainbow Bridge, and Maisie who misses him terribly.
After 45 years of marriage, Merilyn will dearly miss him. He was a wonderful husband and best friend.
In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made in Daniel’s name to support Dr. Rizwan Romee’s research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284 or online at www.dana-farber.org/gift.
Services will be private.
