I'm Jamie's cousin on his father's side (my mother was Ken's sister). The photo I posted was taken in 1972 at Niagara Falls. In the back row Jamie (age 13) is on the left, me (age 12) in the middle, and Jamie's brother Eddie (age 14) on the right. My brother Steve (age 8) is in front.
I last saw Jamie at Eddie's funeral last year. Jamie also attended my mothers funeral and 90th birthday. Given how difficult traveling was for him I really appreciated his attendance.
Eddie, Jamie, Steve, and myself spent a great deal of time together as kids. In the summers Eddie and Jamie came back to our house after day camp everyday. It was fun. In earlier years our cousin Debbie also shared some great times with us.
Growing up Jamie was incredibly competitive and it was obvious. We are connected in that way because I'm also competitive but in a less obvious way. Athletically I was no match for him. I owned a table hockey set and it was damn annoying that Jamie could defeat me on my home ice. However, smart as Jamie was, he was no match for me playing Stratego (but then I was no match for my father). I think Jamie and I were pretty evenly matched playing Croquet. Growing up Jamie had amazing physical strength for his size and was very extroverted, the opposite of me. I admired his abilities. It didn't surprise me he was so successful in his career until the accident.
After the accident Jamie had an incredible will to keep on living independently despite serious physical limitations. His determination was inspiring. He very much didn't want to go which makes this even sadder.
When I look at the four of us in that photo I remember the fun times but I also remember the pain and sadness in our families that effected all of us our entire lives. But it was still worth living.
