

“John Y,” as he was so admirably called, was a man of many endeavors. John’s professional career started in teaching in 1950. He spent the next 35 years in the teaching field as a middle school math teacher, and wood shop teacher in the towns of Franklin, and Braintree. John had also been a deputy tax collector on a part-time basis since 1971. He retired from teaching in 1985, and went full-time in the deputy collector business. “John Y Brady Deputy Collector Inc.” has served many communities on the south shore, and Cape Cod for over 40 years.
John was always a leader when it came to giving back to his community. He was named “Citizen of the Year” for the Town of Scituate in 2003. He served as a member of the Scituate School Committee for 12 years, and was the chairman for three. He was on the zoning board of appeals for over 20 years, and a member of the Democratic Town Committee for many years. He helped establish, and was a member of Scituate Community Christmas until his passing. He is a lifetime member of the Scituate Knights of Columbus, and was Grand Knight three times. He was given the Bishop Meehan award for Knight of the Year in Massachusetts. He was a member of the Scituate Beach Association, and a lifetime member of the Isadore H. Y. Federkerwich Marching and Chowder Society.
John Loved to travel and collect antiques. His most memorable adventure was in the summer of 1971, when the family embarked on a cross country trip to Disney land in an old school bus he had converted in to a camper. In later years John and his wife Lorraine enjoyed many cruises, cross country trips, and winters in Florida. He loved spending the holidays with his family, and especially the time he spent with his grand children.
John’s unique personality and humorous ways will leave many lasting memories with his family, and friends. There will never be another “John Y”.
John is also survived by 4 children; Diane Kelleher (Daniel), John Jr. (Laurie), Mark (Erica), and Beth Cunningham (Craig) all of Scituate, 16 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his daughter, Debra Hoffman (William). A funeral will begin at 10AM on Thursday, Sept. 15th at Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Rd, Scituate followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary of the Nativity Church, Scituate at 11AM. Visiting hours will be held from 5-8PM on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers donations in John’s memory may be made to; Scituate Knights of Columbus Charity, P.O.
