Joe was born in Dorchester, MA on April 18, 1931. After graduating from Commerce High School, he married the love of his life, Jean Norton. Joe and Jean were married for 34 years and had three children, Joe, John and Jamie. In 1962 they moved to Scituate. While living in Scituate Joe was active in youth sports coaching Youth Scituate Football, CYO Basketball and CYO Baseball. He was a big SHS football fan, and some would say that every conversation Joe had involved SHS football.
Joe was a member of the Knights of Columbus for many years and enjoyed working the betting games at the annual K of C Carnival.
For many years Joe was employed as Welding Product Sales Representative for Colony Gases in Hingham. He loved his work and the people he worked with.
Joe had many positive qualities, including his love of animals and children. He very much enjoyed his 3 grandsons, Joey, Koury and Andrew Gilmartin. While in failing health in his later years Joe’s grandsons often visited him and fondly referred to Joe as “Papa Gill.” Joe’s grandchildren were his greatest joy and the light of his life.
Joe was predeceased by his eldest son Joseph E. Gilmartin in 1976 and by his loving wife Jean in 1985. Despite these tragic losses Joe remained a strong support for his family and was always there for his children whenever needed. Joe truly loved his entire family and extended family of friends he made throughout the years. He was the brother of Helen Naughton of Quincy and the late John Gilmartin and Ann O’Donnell.
Joe was a hardworking, kind, dedicated, loving man, husband, father, grandfather and friend to the end and he will be missed by many.
Joe’s family thanks the people who cared for him at Royal Knoll Nursing Home in Norwell, the South Shore VNA and Scituate Senior Center and Scituate Housing Authority.
Funeral from the Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home on Saturday October 10th, 2015 at 9 AM followed by a Mass at St. Mary of the Nativity Church, 1 Kent St. Scituate at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
In lieu of flowers please make a donation in Joe’s memory to the charity of your choice.
