Lori A. (McGovern) Mahoney, beloved mother, sister and cherished friend, passed away on February 26, 2024 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by the loving comfort of her family and remained a beacon of strength throughout her final moments.
Lori was born September 12, 1962 to Joseph M. and Jean C. (Belisle) McGovern in Providence, RI. She attended Lesley University, where she received both her B.A. and M.A. in Education. She settled in Scituate, MA where she raised three sons with her former husband Frank Mahoney. Her boys were the light of her life, and she provided them unwavering love, guidance and support throughout their lives.
As a beloved second grade teacher at Jenkins Elementary School, Lori nurtured her students with warmth, good humor and high expectations. While there, her circle of colleagues evolved into lasting and devoted friendships. These were only a sample of the many circles of friends who counted Lori as an integral part. Her infectious laughter, keen observations and indomitable spirit kept Lori as the bright center of a universe filled with loving companions. She relished outings to restaurants, especially those with “twin boiled” lobster specials, earning her the title of “Lobster Queen.” When it came to relaxing, she would prefer sitting in a beach chair with her toes in the water or cruising in a boat with the wind in her hair to most other forms of entertainment. The fortitude Lori demonstrated in living her days to the fullest has served as a remarkable example to all who knew her.
Lori is survived by her devoted son, Patrick M. Mahoney of Pembroke, the source of her immeasurable pride and joy. She was pre-deceased by her sons Tim and Justin, tragic losses which caused her great anguish. She leaves behind her sisters Karen Lombardi of Duncan, S.C. and Jean Gallagher of Irmo, S.C., and brother Joseph McGovern of Cranston, R.I. as well as many cherished nieces and nephews. Her siblings meant the world to Lori and their bond was unshakeable throughout her life and final years.
Visiting hours will be held at Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home in Scituate, MA on Thursday, February 29, from 3-7p.m. A Mass of the Resurrection will take place Friday March 1, 2024 at 10:00am at St. Mary of the Nativity Catholic Church in Scituate, MA, with internment following at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
