

passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on the evening of September 8, 2022, after an illness. He is survived by his loving wife, Rita (Mahoney) Doherty, with whom he shared 56 years of marriage, and his six children: Sarah Clogston, and her husband Gordon Milford Clogston III; Jean Guenther, and her husband Curt Guenther; Julia Liburdi; Matthew Doherty; Timothy Doherty, and his wife Angelina; and John (Jack) Doherty, and his wife Marci. He was the cherished Papa of eleven grandchildren, loving brother of the late E. Thomas Doherty, PhD and Brother in-law of Nancy Long, PhD.
Born in Boston MA, Marty was raised in Dorchester and attended Boston public schools. Marty joined the US Army Reserves and served as a Medic for 8 years. He and Rita met in New York, fell in love and later married. They lived in Humarock, MA for many years, where they began their family. Marty loved being near the ocean, whether he was fishing, lobstering or just taking the kids out on the boat. He could always be reached by the CB handle “Neptune.” In 1986, the family moved close to Scituate harbor and became members of St. Mary of the Nativity Parish. Marty was a longstanding member of the Scituate Knights of Columbus and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. Marty was always musically inclined and prior to his retirement he began playing the concertina and the bodhran. Marty and Rita spent many Saturday nights enjoying Irish music at sessions in Plymouth, where Marty played the bodhran and concertina. Marty was a skilled and respected telephone technician and he retired with over 40 years of service with the phone company. Marty and Rita enjoyed traveling together, especially to Ireland.
Marty was a true master technician in all facets of life. Musician, electrician, fisherman, carpenter, father and husband.
Visitation Tuesday, September 13, 2022 from 4-8 PM at Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Road, Scituate. Funeral Mass Wednesday, September 14, 2022 at 10 AM at St. Mary of the Nativity Church, 1 Kent Street, Scituate. Interment to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
