Mary L. Smith

Born in Hingham, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the late Weston and Esther (Torrey) Belcher. She was a graduate of Rockland High School, class of 1952, and Framingham State College, class of 1956. She taught home economics at Silver Lake before dedicating her life to being a homemaker and seamstress. She was extremely talented, and created beautiful clothes. She made many prom and wedding dresses. She then began quilting, and continued making beautiful quilts, which were prize winning. She developed wonderful friendships with her quilting group. She was a devoted member of the Congregational Church, and her community there was very special to her.

She was a devoted mother to Tracey Smith of Plymouth, Cheryl Macleod (Scott Macleod) of Hull and J. Stephen Smith.

Cherished grandmother of Matthew Paradiso, Leanne Paradiso, Megan Macleod, Angus Macleod, Flynn Smith and Graeme Smith. Great-grandmother to Helber Nunes, Cash and Jameson Paradiso.

She is also survived by her dear sister Elizabeth (Betty) Lynch. She was pre-deceased by her sisters Marilyn Shepherd and Amy Loughman, and her brothers William and Weston Belcher.

She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, who were very special to her. She enjoyed their visits and phone calls immensely.

A visitation will be held from 11:00 AM-12:30 PM on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Road, Scituate, Massachusetts, 02066. Funeral Service at 1:00 PM on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at the First Trinitarian Congregational Church, 381 Country Way, Scituate, Massachusetts 02066. Interment immediately following at Fairview Cemetery: Trinity Park Section, located behind the church. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
