It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, husband, grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend, Melvin J. Boucher, who peacefully left us on March 19, 2025, at the age of 86, in Scituate, Massachusetts. He lived a long and joyful life, demonstrating immense courage during his battle with illness in his later years. Throughout his life, Melvin displayed remarkable strength, unyielding dedication, a zest for life and learning, and a deep commitment to human connection. His love for his family never wavered, even in the face of adversity.
Born on February 9, 1939, Melvin was the thirteenth of fifteen children to Patrick Boucher and Yvonne Picard in St. Agatha, Maine, a small French town on the US-Canadian border. From a young age, he exhibited a profound sense of duty and a desire to serve others. Raised in a devout Catholic family that gave rise to two priests and one nun, Melvin initially considered the priesthood as a career. After attending Seminary school, he eventually chose a different path pursuing coursework in psychology, which he thoroughly enjoyed.
Driven by his strong sense of service, Melvin joined the United States Air Force in 1957, proudly serving for a number of years. During his time in the Air Force, he formed a trusted friendship with a fellow airman of Filipino descent, who introduced him to a pen pal in the Philippines. Guided by his deep belief that true human connection is found in the heart, he was drawn to this relationship, immersing himself in Filipino culture and strengthening their bond through countless letters and photographs.
In 1962, after years of correspondence, Melvin traveled by boat for two months to meet and marry the love of his life, Carmencita Macapagal Prodigalidad, the daughter of a doctor and a high school principal. They were married in Manila on June 4, 1962, marking the beginning of a lifelong partnership built on love, faith, and family values.
Together, Melvin and Carmen created a loving home in Weymouth, Massachusetts, where they raised their two daughters, Nicole and Sharon. Melvin’s devotion to his family was evident in the precious moments he shared with his children, whether fishing, skiing, playing tennis, horseback riding, or enjoying family vacations in Mashpee, MA. Always eager to preserve memories, Melvin was one of the first to own a home video camera, constantly capturing his children’s performances and interviews. Melvin’s dedication to his family came first, even as he worked for over four decades at Procter & Gamble and Twin Rivers Technology. For him, work was always secondary to the well-being and happiness of his loved ones.
Melvin’s commitment extended beyond his immediate family to his large extended family, where he worked tirelessly to maintain strong connections, ensuring that love and tradition endured across generations and distances.
A man of great faith, Melvin’s service to his community was profound. He served as a Eucharistic Minister, bringing communion to the sick and homebound, touching many lives with his quiet strength and steadfast belief in the power of love and faith. Additionally, he served as a catechist, educating young people in the ways of faith. In his free time, Melvin found great joy in playing and teaching tennis, a sport he cherished and continually sought to master throughout his life.
Melvin is survived by his wife, Carmen; daughters, Nicole and Sharon; sons-in-law, Mike Ramirez and Christopher Keough; and grandchildren, Zoe, Desmond, Julien, Jude, and Kellan. His legacy will live on through the lessons he imparted and the love he so freely gave to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Melvin’s heart was always his guide, led by his values of hard work, kindness, and humility, qualities that will forever be treasured by his family.
A visitation will be held in honor of Melvin at the Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home in Scituate, MA, on Thursday, April 24th, from 3–7 PM, followed by a Funeral Mass on Friday, April 25th, at 10 AM at St. Albert the Great in Weymouth, MA.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, a cause close to Melvin’s heart.
Dad, you will forever remain in our hearts. Your strength, love, and wisdom will continue to guide us, and we will carry your memory with us always. We take comfort in knowing that you are now at peace, and you will never be forgotten.
