Paul John Sweeney, 72, of Jamaica Plain, MA, and a longtime resident of Scituate, MA, passed away unexpectedly on March 17, 2026, in Long Beach, CA. He leaves behind a life defined by kindness and generosity, with an enduring sense of joy and a deep appreciation for life. Always with a smile beaming from ear to ear, Paul approached life with a sense of awe and wonder, believing each day on earth was a true blessing.
Paul was born on June 21, 1953, in Brighton, Massachusetts to Ardelle and Arthur Sweeney, one of ten children. He grew up in Quincy and attended North Quincy High School, and learned to sail at Squantum Yacht Club. He later graduated summa cum laude from University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1979. While working at the Norfolk County Probate and Family Court by day, he earned his law degree from Suffolk University Law School at night, graduating cum laude in 1984. He was promoted to Assistant Register of Probate at the Norfolk Probate & Family Court, and served as legal supervisor of the Fiduciary Department. Paul later went on to receive an advanced degree in Tax Law from Boston University in 1988.
In 1989, he entered private practice, opening a family law firm with his partner, former state trooper David W. Moran. In 2003, Paul established his own solo practice, which he maintained until his retirement in December 2025. Over a distinguished career spanning more than 35 years in family law, he was devoted to guiding clients through some of life’s most difficult moments with trust, compassion, and integrity. He was a brilliant attorney who cared deeply for others; he consistently went out of his way to make others’ lives a little easier and remained committed to his work nearly until his final days. Widely respected by both peers and clients—often described as calm, compassionate, and insightful—he was known for going above and beyond to achieve the best possible outcomes for those he served.
Paul found his joy, purpose, and passion in the courtroom, but was truly happiest when he was on the water with the ocean breeze in his face and a tiller in his hand. In 2015, he earned his auxiliary sailing endorsement and Master 100-ton license, securing his U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential. When he wasn’t on his sailboat, he loved spending time with his two daughters, practicing yoga, and watching the sunset. He loved to cook for others, whether it be making blueberry pies from scratch at the holidays, or hosting a clambake on Minot beach during the summer. Paul left a lasting, positive impression on everyone he met. His sincere compassion for all living beings will be deeply missed, and those who had the privilege of knowing him will always remember his extraordinary kindness.
Paul is survived by his two loving daughters, Siobhan (and her partner, Cole) and Falon Phillips (and her husband, Nick); his siblings Kathleen, Constance, Maura, Brian (Marta), Peter (Danielle), and David (Amy); and his many cherished nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Ardelle Sweeney; his brothers, Michael and John; and his sister, Sheila Bouchie.
A visitation will take place on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, from 3-7 pm at Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Road, Scituate. A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at 10 am at Harbor United Methodist Church, 55 First Parish Road, Scituate.
