William (Bill) F. Whittier of Scituate and Palm Coast, Florida, formerly of Arlington, passed away at age 87 on September 27 after a long, happy life. Bill was a graduate of Arlington High School. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Government and Economics from Harvard University in 1948 and a graduate certificate of Accounting and Finance from Bentley University in 1957. He served in the 43rd Infantry Division of the Army of Occupation in Germany during the Korean War. He married and raised his large family in Arlington and enjoyed summers at the beach in Humarock. He was a Certified Production Planning and Inventory manager, who worked most of his career at Deran Confectionary Company in Cambridge, Schrafft Candy Company in Charlestown, and Bleyer Industries in Wakefield. Bill also served as Member/Chairman of the Arlington Catholic School Board and as Treasurer/Director of the Arlington Youth Visit Exchange Program. In his retirement, he traveled the coast and explored the country to reunite with friends from the 43rd Infantry Division. In his free time, Bill enjoyed gardening, carpentry, reading, golf, crossword puzzles, roller coasters, and desserts of any kind. He received a number of regional awards for his landscape and wildlife photography. The depth and breadth of his knowledge was uncanny, making him a daunting Trivial Pursuit opponent. He was a devoted fan of all Boston sports teams, particularly the New England Patriots, but Bill’s family always came first in his heart. Beloved husband of Margaret (O’Brien) Whittier for more than 60 years. Loving father of Valerie Whittier and her husband Richard Cox of Lantana, Texas, Stephanie Whittier St. Laurence and Harvey St. Laurence of Plymouth, William (Bill) F.
