Cheryl K. Jordan 78, of Bayard, Nebraska, passed away peacefully with family by her side on July 19, 2025. Born on February 23, 1947, to Ardon and Shirley M. (Cross) Hight. Cheryl lived a life defined by faith, connection, and a vibrant larger-than-life personality.
Cheryl, affectionately known as the “Hippi Chic” embraced every conversation with warmth, wit, and her signature “groovy spirit.” A proud champion of peace, music, kindness and a deep love for animals. Cheryl’s presence was magnetic and joyous. She was ALWAYS late; Jordy was always up in arms about her being late and said he knows without a doubt she will be late for her own funeral… SO please don’t be surprised!
Her varied career included impactful roles at The Stable Club, Mitchell Index, Popsie’s, the Bayard Transcript, and KNEB, where her sincerity and energy left lasting impressions on both colleagues and community members. Those who knew her knew she was an exceptional typist. It was an incredible sight to watch! She was able to have full discussions while typing 100s of words a minute with minimal to no errors! You would have thought she was a robot. She was also blessed with gorgeous handwriting. Between her and Jordy, you would think their letters were completed by computer.
Cheryl’s family was the center of her world. Through her union with Jerry D. Smith, she brought James Dean Smith and Jefferi Mark Smith into the world. Insightful and protective, she was quick to tease her boys “for being boys” and even quicker to celebrate who they had become. On November 1, 1975, she married her soulmate, Gregory “Jordy” Jordan. Their 27-year union was a testament to enduring love. Even in his absence, Cheryl’s heart remained full and devoted. She joyfully anticipated being reunited with Jordy, whom as family joked, should be on guard for all she’d share after two decades apart!
Cheryl is survived by: Son: Jefferi (Sherri) Smith; Grandchildren: Landon (Leah) Smith, Trey Smith, Sara (Jared) Robertson, Jadon (LeAnne) Smith, Jessi (Tyler) Smith; Great-grandchildren: Ryleigh Smith, Grady Smith, Brooks Smith, Harper Robertson, and Hunter Robertson; Brother: Mark (Donna) Hight: Nephews & Niece: Derek Hight, Scott Hight, and Erica Schuppe; Great Nephews & Niece: Maxwell Hight, Kaylee Schuppe, Lila Schuppe; Cousin & Lifelong Best Friend: Renee Kautz; Daughters by love; Deirdre (Chris) Miller & Celeste (Teddy) Nutter.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Gregory “Jordy” Jordan; brother David Simpson; and son James Dean Smith; brother-in-law Brad Jordan.
The graveside will take place at Chimney Rock Cemetery on August 30, 2025, at 10:30 A.M. A celebration of Cheryl’s extraordinary life honoring her lifelong commitment to kindness and community will take place following graveside at Bayard American Legion. The family welcomes stories, laughter, music, and memories, just as Cheryl would have wanted. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to her son, Jefferi Smith, to assist with funeral expenses. Fond memories and condolences may be left at www.dugankramer.com.
Cheryl’s spirited presence, her humor, compassion, and free soul left an unforgettable mark on everyone she met. We are all richer for having known her. She will be greatly missed. Rest in peace, Hippi Chic, we’ll see you on the flower path.
