

George J. Winters Jr., 85, of Scottsbluff, died Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at the Western Nebraska Veteran’s Home in Scottsbluff. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at 1:00 P.M. at the Fairview Cemetery in Rushville with Pastor Stephen Demoret officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Nebraska Army National Guard. Cremation was at Sunset Memorial Park Crematory in Scottsbluff. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Disabled American Veterans Post No.33, 602 Avenue A, Bayard, Nebraska 69334. George was born October 11, 1923, at Rushville, Nebraska to George J. Sr. and Frances (Veskeana) Winters. He served in the United States Army with the 50th Engineer’s Battalion during World War II from March 30, 1943 to March 19, 1946. His tours included the Aleutian Islands and the United States. He received the Sharpshooter M-1 Rifle, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon. George worked as a farmhand, painter, photographer and roofing contractor, living in Alliance, Gordon and Rushville. His hobbies included photography, yard sales and auctions. Survivors include his son, George Dale (Laura) Winters of Bayard; daughter, Jackie Lynn Winters of Stevensville, Montana; sisters, Doris Viola Winters Stewart of Denver, Colorado and Betty Jane (Doane) Dubry of Chadron; brother, Bill (Pauline) Winters of Pocatello, Idaho; two nieces; seven nephews; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, George Sr. in 1963; his mother, Frances in 1989; his brother, Harold Edward Winters in 1995; and a brother-in-law, Everett W. Stewart in 1993.
