

Popee Blackos, 75, of Scottsbluff, Nebraska died Wednesday, January 4, 2012, at Residency Care Center. Her funeral service will be at 10:00 AM, Monday, January 9, at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 810 1st Avenue, Bayard, NE with Father Elias Warren officiating. Interment will be in the Bayard Cemetery following the service. A Trisagion prayer service will be at 6:00 PM, Sunday, January 8 at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church. A Memorial has been established to the Greek Orthodox Church. Friends may call at the Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel on Saturday, January 7 from 1:00PM to 6:00PM. Popee was born on September 22, 1936 in the village of Lefkes on the island of Paros in Greece to Annastasios and Efrosini (Ragoussis) Roussou. She received her education attending school in Paros, and at the age of 12 completed her education in Athens, Greece. She later attended tailoring school and upon graduation, worked as a professional seamstress in Athens. She met and later married Nick Blackos in a Greek Orthodox wedding ceremony held in Athens on November 3, 1957. Popee immigrated to the United States in May of 1958 and made her home in Bridgeport and Scottsbluff, Nebraska. She was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church of Bayard since her arrival from Greece. Popee was a homemaker, and did tailoring and sewing for local residents from her home until 1978 when she accepted a job at Eckhardt Cleaners. She continued to work in the tailoring business as a seamstress after Eckhardt’s changed ownership until December 2004. She was an avid gardener and excellent cook specializing in dishes of her Greek heritage. Her grandson Nathan was the joy of her life. Survivors include her sons Gus of Lincoln, Tom of Scottsbluff, John of Dallas, TX, Chris and daughter-in-law Lujean of Tampa, FL and grandson Nathan of Scottsbluff; sisters Pipina Roussou and Sofia Xanthopoulos of Athens, Greece. Her father Annastasios Roussou, mother Efrosini Roussou and husband Nick Blackos preceded her in death.
