Mom and I were always close , but I know that we became even more close in the past few years . We both joked that just as I retired, she moved to CO and she then became my new full time ""job"" . Mom never understood how much I enjoyed doing things for her to make her life a little easier . I took her to appointments and I was basically her ""personal shopper"" . I thoroughly enjoyed it partly because I loved getting her a ""treat"" that wasn't on her shopping list- like candy or cookies or flowers and best of all because Mom was so appreciative of absolutely any little thing I did for her . 

I have so many wonderful memories of mom from my childhood - field trips that I ""volunteered "" her for , home baked goodies for after school or for the whole classroom, Girl Scouts and 4H , choir meetings , swim lessons - she kept up beautifully with all of it as well as taking care of her mother for many years and working as a nurse in a clinic . She was an amazing & devoted mom . Later on , Mom of course was a wonderful grandma, too . My daughters could always  ""con "" her into all kinds of things . She would fall for anything they told her .  Mom had a good laugh about it years later, when she discovered that my grandsons were doing that same thing to me ! 

Mom was a natural care giver for her entire life . She showed love and compassion as she took care of all of us , but especially when she in turn took care of her mother, her husband , her daughter and her brother each in their last few weeks of life . She never had a complaint or a selfish moment through all of that . She was incredibly strong even as she lost her youngest daughter Tammy after a long illness. I know that loss changed Mom forever, but she always kept her faith that she would someday see all of her loved ones again in heaven . My mom also gave me so much strength and hope after my husband Ron passed away unexpectedly last November. She loved him dearly and missed him and she was always there to support me . 

When we finally convinced Mom to move to CO , we knew it could be such an overwhelming move . She had lived in the house that my dad built in NE for over 60 years . Leaving her home ,her friends and neighbors had to be so difficult ! But Mom handled it with so much courage and determination . She looked forward to living near her family, meeting new friends and not having to take care of a house . She immediately fit right in at her new retirement place and just loved visiting with all her new friends . She had a great memory and always kept up with everyone's news with genuine interest . I know they all really miss her. 

Mom had a great sense of humor and could be so funny ! I She and I would laugh until we cried ! I miss that so much . When my husband Ron would constantly tease her , she would just play right along with it and had plenty of her own "" comebacks "" for him as well . They were quite the pair , and he would do absolutely anything for her that she ever needed. Mom has found her well deserved place in heaven now with all her loved ones - no more pain , or worry , or struggles with poor vision . It's true that "" her angel wings were ready, even if our hearts were not "" . 

Mom - I know you're always with us , even now . Nothing can ever separate us . You will always continue to be my loving guide to doing what's right , my strength and inspiration . Now that my full time ""job"" of taking care of you is finished , I will try to find something new to help others in some way - just as you would do if you were here . You were always so proud of your family , but I hope you know how very proud of you we are as well . You were the perfect example of showing forgiveness and unconditional love . Your goodness, generosity and grace will live on in some way in each of us . We were so blessed to have you in our lives . Thank you, Mom. Love you and miss you !  We'll see you again in another place and time on the other side of the stars ..Love Peggy

Awe Dad that made me cry. She's definitely in heaven with Grandpa and Tammy, Dick and Ron and absolutely deserving of it. I remember fishing on the boat and cook outs in the back yard. That house will always hold the fondest memories of hide and seek and the smell of bacon and eggs every morning. I made sure my kids got to play hide and seek there, always told them it was the best house for that! She took good care of all of us and will continue looking down and watching over us. Miss you Grandma... Miss your cookies and candies at Christmas, miss your fresh vegetables from the garden and home made pickles, some if my best memories as a kid! Love you.

It's taken me a while to be able to comment on Mom's passing.  My thoughts keep running into each other and are somewhat jumbled.  First I think it's our Sunday morning calls I will miss the most.  Then it's the times Mom would stay at the cabin and insist on helping with the dishes.  With her poor vision, it was always a game when she left guessing where she put some kitchen item.  No, that's not it either.  Maybe it's the times I stayed with her and slept on the hide a bed after she moved to Arvada.  No, it was other memories of her baking and family dinners and fresh vegetables from the neighbors on the counter.  

I guess if you believe there is a Heaven then you have to believe she is there.  Certainly no earthly person is more deserving.  I believe because I can see her arriving as Dad has the boat behind the camper and says ""where ya been?"".  I believe because I smell the Turkey in the oven as Mom worries over getting the gravy right.  I believe because now she is sitting in her chair getting kisses from one of Tammy's dogs.  I believe because she is still dragging us to swim lessons or taking her turn driving to a scout meeting.  All these things she was she still is and as long as we have these memories I believe she always will be.  I believe there is no time in Heaven.  Only an eternal loop where we can jump from one time and place to another time and place.  You may leave earth on a date and at a given time but once in heaven you are in the loop.  Loved ones are there and have been there forever and so have you.

When it's my turn, I know Mom will say ""what took you so long"" and Dad will say ""whatcha doin"".  Miss ya Mom.  Keep stirring the gravy.

I always said my Grammy was as tough as nails and as sweet as pie and I really think that is true. She had this way of getting anyone to do almost anything she wanted. Not in a pushy way but suggestions from a woman you couldn't say no to - it didn't matter whether she was trying to get you to eat lemon bars or trying to get you to do a chore she had thought of, you were bound to do it. I will miss her so much in so many ways. She had the best and often funniest stories. Her sense of humor was amazing and we would laugh together until she was crying & I could barely catch my breath. Her ability to laugh through so many things was such a strength and made her a pleasure to be with. When I think of her I think I will most remember her being such a remarkable wife, sister, mother, grandmother & great grandmother. She was so caring & supportive. I am so happy that she was able to have a relationship with my children. I know I am a better person for having her in my life. I don't even know where to begin, when I think about my Aunt Shirley and what I will say on her tribute wall. Words will never do her justice. I always loved visiting in the summers when our family, Mom, Dad (Shirley's brother) Judy (my sister) and I came to Scottsbluff to visit . We divided our time between Mom and Dad's family, but it was always fun and relaxing when we went to Aunt Shirley and Uncle Bud's house. I remember having lots of delicious food and desserts and laughing a lot with my cousins and the whole family. Uncle Dick was always there too and it was a wonderful time. The memories are so very fond in my heart. 

After my Dad died in 2008, our family visited three more times before Aunt Shirley died. Each time we spent quality time with her and I got to know her in a different way. She was not just Dad's sister and my Aunt. She was a friend.  Over the past couple of years, I called her on a regular basis and we had the best conversations. She always made me laugh so hard, with her dry wit and keen sense of humor, political views-and shared memories of Dad, their childhood with grandma and grandpa, her kids, grandkids and great grandkids. 

Aunt Shirley had a difficult time, particularly after Tammy passed away, but she was so strong, that she kept going and she talked about Tammy and was willing to share. She did not close herself off in her grief. She shared her feelings and her sadness and how difficult it was for her. And she kept her sense of humor even though at times I know it was so hard for her. It was a process for her, gaining closure after Tammy passed away, but I remember the joy in her voice when I called after she and Peggy had gone to San Diego to spread some of Tammy's ashes.  I think she was so happy to do that for Tammy and it brought her comfort and maybe some closure. That was the sense I got from talking with her and I hope I am right. 

Another thing about Aunt Shirley was her love of her grand  dogs. She didn't have dogs in her later years, but she loved it when her kids brought their dogs to her home. When my precious dog Ruby passed away, about two years ago, she and Uncle Dick sent a sympathy card to me that they both signed. That meant so much and clearly reveals the kind of hearts both of them had, acknowledging and knowing that Ruby was my family and that her death caused me grief. They brought me great comfort with that one small gesture and their innate understanding of what Ruby meant to me. 

Aunt Shirley couldn't see well, but even after my Mom broke her hip in January, she  sent cards to Mom. She was always wanting to find out how Mom was doing every time we talked on the phone. Little did we know that Aunt Shirley had little time left when Mom had her accident in January, but throughout the six months we talked, she always wanted to hear about Mom. She was a very selfless individual up until the end. 

I talked to Aunt Shirley  about six weeks ago, and it wasn't long after that, that she got sick. We had a great conversation the day I called, and she seemed in good spirits and was very talkative, even though she was suffering from knee pain. When we closed our conversations, any time we talked,  I always told her that I loved her  and she told me the same. This last time was no different. I will miss Aunt Shirley very much. I do believe she is still with us in some way. A spirit as alive as hers doesn't die. I feel so fortunate to have had her in my life for so long. Goodbye Aunt Shirley. I am imagining that all of your loved ones were waiting when you passed into heaven. I hope to see you there. Not sure if I have earned it,  but maybe you can put in a good word for me!  I love you and I will miss you.

Randy and Peggy -    I am so sorry to hear about your Mom's death.   I worked with her at Bluffs Medical Clinic for 14 years from 1976 until her retirement.  We were a true work family and the doctors were so good to us all.  Shirley was a constant delight to be around.  She was a great nurse.  I saw her a few times after her retirement.  Diana Rohrick and I had a very fun lunch at Shirley's home a few years ago.  Shirley had beautiful table cloth and dishes and made our simple fast food very special.   I loved her and respected her. Peggy, I was so sorry to hear about your mother. She was such a sweet and kind lady.  Please accept my sincere condolences. I know you have many fond memories of her.
