Audrey Lucille Knight Turner was born April 13, 1924 in Avery, Mississippi to Ruben Edward Knight and Lillian Alice Hanes, third child to an eventual six. She often spoke of family life on the farm, the hard work and the fun. Graduating from Seagoville High School in 1941, she went on to polish her secretarial skills at Draughon’s Business College.
The year 1947 found her marrying Grady Levaughn Turner, or “Dick.” Dick’s brother, Mark, was married to Audrey’s sister, Berniece. The two couples shared backyards in Shreveport, Louisiana and then lived near one another in Longview, Texas. Dick and Audrey’s only child, Grady Faris Turner was born in 1953. Eventually marrying Dee Dusek of Dallas, Grady gave Audrey her two grandchildren, Katie Lewis in Warwick, New York and Jonathan Turner in Gunnison, Colorado. Her great grandchildren are Keevan, Wyatt and Keira Lewis.
Audrey is preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her siblings: Howard Knight, Berniece Turner, “Pete” Knight, “Bill” Knight, and Raymond Knight. She is survived by many nieces and nephews: Jeff Turner, Deborah Mitchell, Sharon Wermuth, Traci Eichin, Terri Martin, Lori Timbrell, Angela Knight, Darryl Knight, and Jason Knight; and many, many great nieces and nephews.
After 28 years of marriage, sadly Dick died in 1975, leaving Audrey alone. But of course, as a hospitable and generous person, she busied herself in the American Cancer Society. Around 1977 she moved up to Dallas, then Seagoville, where she helped in the Seagoville Historical Committee and Seagoville Art Council. She loved her family and spent many hours documenting family history and genealogy. She worked as a secretary for many years at the Lagow Elementary in Dallas and finally retired from Seagoville Library. She bought picture-framing equipment and had a very tidy business out of her garage on Quinette. This augmented her talents of home decorating. She always had a beautiful home and garden where she enjoyed time with her family and friends, hosting dinners and ‘fish frys’.
In 2005 she joined Grady, Dee and the grandkids in Colorado until 2010 when, without the grandchildren, the three moved to San Angelo, Texas, to be close to Raymond and his girls. She lived independently until dementia slowly forced to her to share Grady’s home in 2017. The disease worsened until Hospice began visiting regularly in the Fall of 2020. Audrey Lucille Turner finally fell asleep in death on May 15, 2021. She was attentively and lovingly cared for by her son and daughter-in-law up to her last breath.
As cruel as dementia can be, Audrey never lost her sense of humor or good nature. Throughout her life she was always concerned for the comfort of those around her. The last nights of her being cognitive, she always thanked her caretakers as they tucked her in at night. She was a very fine and gracious woman, who set a wonderful example as a loving mother, mother-in-law, aunt, ‘Grandma’ and great ‘Grandma’.
