Emma Maggie Marie Tibbs Driggars was born May 18, 1928 to Joseph Early and Betty Ann Murphy Tibbs in Rochester (Haskel County) Texas. She attended Mitchell County Schoolbetween Rochester and Knox City. Sometime between 1938 and 1939, the Tibbs family moved to Winnsboro (Wood County) Texas, where she started 5th grade at Clebett Springs School in the Musgrove Community. Maggie was involved in several school programs andactivities. Maggie grew up in the Smyrna Baptist Church where she accepted Christ as her Savior at age 14.
She had two fond memories of music: going with her dad to community gospel singings and attending a Stamps Baxter Quartet singing school at the Smyrna Church, and one working in a grocery store dipping ice cream. She said she never dipped so manycones and her arm was so sore! Maggie met her future husband Dewey Driggars at a Smyrna Baptist Church revival. He came to church with members and Maggie fell in love at first sight. They dated for a few years before Dewey went to war. While he was gone, Maggie held a couple of jobs – one as a Clerk-Typist for American Legion in Musgrove and two – cleaned and built up the air brakes on Greyhound busses in Dallas. Upon Dewey’s discharge from the Army, Maggie and he married, November 12, 1945. Maggie didn’t feel she could run a household and attend high school, so she quit after the first quarter in her senior year.
They lived in the Perryville/Winnsboro-East Texas area for a few years. Two daughters born to them in this home…Venita June and Sharion Jolene. In 1951, they moved to Seagoville on Glenn Road where they had two other children Sherry Glee and Dewey Robin. Maggie lived a simple life, being a housewife to her husband and a mother to these four children.
Her love for her God and her church were evident each week. she held memberships in several churches, Zipp City Baptist – Zipp City, First Missionary Baptist – Seagoville, Bethel Baptist-Seagoville, Robinwood Baptist-Seagoville and lastly Central Baptist-Crandall. Prior to joining Central Baptist and her declining health issues, she was involved in music, teaching Sunday School and mission work.
Maggie had many specialties and qualities- As a Wife: ironing/pressing the clothes (even Dewey’s work clothes); a clean and organized home; always told her children: your daddy and I always had “a lot of love” As a Cook: chocolate pies – even the fried pies; Nothing Stew (she called it “Thoop”), teacakes, chicken and dressing; As a Mother: took us to church; made our clothes and school lunches; having picnics out under the backyard trees, taught us the value of being a housewife and mother.
Her Spiritual Side: always wanted to participate in everything; studied God’s word every day; thought you should contribute to everything (baby/wedding showers, meals for others, etc.); cards and phone calls ministry; faithful to her church and friends and being a great prayer warrior. Other: She was a social butterfly, even sitting in the nursing home entrance greeting folks as they entered or passed by. She never wavered in her character and moods…steady, firm, content, constant, never wavering.
Besides her family, one of the highlights of her life was working for the public. And she did this after waiting for her children to “fend for themselves”. She began as a soda fountain counter worker at Town and Country Pharmacy. Following that, she worked for over 28 years for Smith Pharmacy in Seagoville as a cosmetic clerk, sales, gift-wrapper, greeting card and decorating specialist, purchase agent of special gifts. She continue with her career after Smith’s sold to Eckerds Drugs/CVS Pharmacy, retiring after ten years with then in November 2005.
Preceded in death by her loving husband Dewey of almost 65 years; son Dewey Robin; parents Joe and Betty Tibbs; two half-brothers and two half-sisters; and sisters Tressie McDowell, Lee Thompson, Opal Folmar, Bessie Reynolds and Jean Ritchie.
