Vernon James Self, 73, passed away peacefully and surrounded by his family, at his home on March 25, 2016. He was born to Holmes and Mary (Riggs) Self on February 7, 1943 in Madill, Oklahoma. Vernon was born in a log cabin, in what he referred to as the “back 40 in Madill” and moved to Dallas as a young boy. He was a 1961 graduate of W.W. Samuel High School. Vernon proudly served his country in the United States Army and the Army Reserve for six years. In 1965 he married the love of his life and they settled down in Mesquite to raise their family. They then moved to Mabank in 1978, where he and his wife built a home on six acres, which he was very proud of and he loved to mow and ride his tractor. Vernon has been employed at Halliburton for the last 38 years as a CNC programmer and still enjoyed going to work every day. Vernon enjoyed being on his computer and often played solitaire as well. He loved his three Dodge Chargers and enjoyed driving them and if you knew Vernon, you will remember his whistle. Vernon’s greatest pleasure in life was his family and to them, he was their foundation and “rock star”. He was always there for each and every one of them and gladly gave his unconditional love. Vernon absolutely loved his grandchildren and they affectionately knew him as “Papa”. His family was so vitally important to him that all sixteen of them went on yearly vacations together. Last year they traveled to Branson, which was somewhere he had wanted to visit for a long time. Vernon took his son, Roy, and son-in-law, Maddox to every opening day Texas Ranger’s game and he proudly took all 16 of his kids and grandkids to the last home game of the season. Let’s Go Rangers! Preceding him in death are his parents Holmes and Mary Self and his brother, Donald Self. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of almost 51 years, Faye Self of Mabank, TX; children: Roy Self and wife, Cathy of Crandall, TX; Tonya Ratley and husband, Ric of Crandall, TX and Jodie Muse and husband, Maddox of Crandall, TX; grandchildren: Matthew Muse, Ashley Self, Corder Pyle, Megan Self, Zachary Muse, Colton Pyle, Brian Self and Colby Pyle; sister Jerri Allen and husband, Steve of Fate, TX and brother Willis Self of Dallas, TX; children of his heart: Hannah Boyle, Emily Boyle and Terence Boyle; many extended family members including lots of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends that will miss him dearly. Visitation will be 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Friday, April 1, 2016 at Roselawn Funeral Home in Seagoville, TX. Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at Central Baptist Church in Crandall, TX, followed by interment at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Seagoville, TX, where he will be laid to rest in the Garden of Valley View.
