

Seaside- Edna Irene Smith, known all her life as Irene (she never liked Edna) was born in Brooken Mountain, Haskell County, Oklahoma to King William Casey and Maude Ballard. The youngest of six children, her mother died when she was 5 years old. She was also preceded in death by brothers Everett Casey, Elmer Casey, Herschell Casey and sisters Lillie Harjes, Vina Shaver, daughter Elmarene Cline and her husband Ralph, one half brother , three half sisters and one great grandson.
Irene migrated to Pacific Grove in 1936 during the dust bowl and Great Depression with her husband, sister, and infant daughter. During the early years she worked in the fish canneries in Monterey and later was a stay at home mom. She enjoyed her association with the seniors at the Oldemeyer Community Center where she served lunch to the “old people” until she was 92 and could no longer drive.
Irene is survived by her son Clarence Smith, daughter Margaret (Bennie) Cooper, grandchildren Judy Godfrey, Joy Desmarais, David Cooper and Carol Torres, eight great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren. Irene was a long time member of Lighthouse Baptist Church where she was also the oldest member.
Friends may call on Friday, January 17 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Bayside Community Mortuary, 1610 Noche Buena Street, Seaside. Services will be held on Saturday, January 18 at 11:00 am at Lighthouse Baptist Church, 1030 Hilby Avenue, Seaside.
