November 1, 1918 --- January 4, 2018
Jean, our beloved Mother, passed away on January 4th, 2018 in her home in Seaside, Ca. Jean was born on November 1st, 1918 in Cadogan, PA. She served as an ensign in the Navy Medical Corps during WW2, at the U.S. Naval Hospital in San Diego, CA. where she met future husband, Norman Friddle. They were married in 1944 and eventually moved to Carmel Valley. In the 60's, the family moved to P.G., later, to Monterey and after Norm died in 1984, Jean moved to Seaside, where she resided for 32 years.
While raising five children, Jean worked full time as a Regisisterd Nurse at the Fort Ord Hospital. Later, she worked at the original Community Hospital in Carmel, as well as many other places on the penninsula. She also worked as a private duty nurse. After retirement from nursing, she went on to work at Montery Salinas Transit for a number of years.
Amazingly, Jean found time for her favorite hobbies including intricate needlepoint and beautiful ceramics, which she enjoyed making as gifts for family and friends. Her real passion though, was reading. You would never see her without a book. She loved to travel and took many ocean cruises and scenic drives with her family. In November, 1959, Jean won the "Queen for a Day" TV show. She asked for a 'Braille' watch and typewriter for her blind son, Mike.
Our Mom was always a happy, outgoing optimist who spoke her mind with seldom an unkind word for anyone. Although Jean never had a great deal of money, she managed to donate to a surprising number of charities and causes as well as the giving of her time and of herself. Jean was a Deacon at her Church, the First Presbyterian Church of Monterey, and also volunteered at Cooper-Molera Adobe.
After her sometimes difficult life on this Earth, she will surely be welcomed in Heaven by our Lord and all those who loved her in life. While we, her children, will miss her more than can be expressed with words, except as we pray, in the tears we shed for the heartbreaking loss of our wonderful mother. We embrace our feelings of sorrow, for along with joy and love, they are among the most important and valuable gifts we have been given, the true glory of God and, perhaps, the very reason for our existence.
Jean was predeceased by her mother, Mabel Love, husband, Norman and sons, Guy and Michael. She is survived by sons, Kennett (Rose) and Marc (Belem) and daughter, JeanAnn (Alan). She has ten grandchildren, and many great and great-great grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at the California Central Coast Veteran's Cemetery in Seaside on Thursday, November 1, 2018 at 2:00 PM. (Jean would have been 100 years young on this day) It will be followed by a gathering at the First Presbyterian Church in Monterey at 3:30 PM.
