Al passed away peacefully on August 14, 2018 during hospice care in their home while surrounded by his loving family - wife, Lois, sons Leroy, Ken and Craig and his wife Jodie. He will be missed by all of his family including, grandchildren, brothers, sister in laws, nieces and nephews and by everyone he touched. A military grave side service at Washelli Abbey View in Brier was held for family members and friends who would be out of town for the Celebration of Life venue.
He was born in Portland on November 28, 1939, to Franklin Barton and Ruth Harwood and moved to Seattle area as a young child, living in what is now Shoreline area. Al and Lois were in the first class to graduate from newly opened Shoreline High School in 1958. Al had signed up for a combination of reserve and active duty in the Navy Submarine Service on his 17th birthday, and was called up for Sub School and active duty in June of 2018. He and Lois were married 9/4/1958 and spent a year and a half in Hawaii after he returned from a long patrol in the orient and the boat returned to it' station in Pearl Harbor. They returned to the Seattle area in June of 1960 to introduce their 3 month old son (Leroy) too his grandparents and the whole Harwood and Lagerstedt families and friends. They moved into the Shoreline District when Leroy and Craig were in
Kindergarten and First Grade, and stayed there until all had graduated from Shorecrest High School.
Al was a King of toys and hobbies in many interests over the years. He had been the President of the Shoreline Hot Rod Club, involved in Ham Radio, built model boats, airplanes, and built and played with radio controlled airplanes as well as getting in a lot of family and friends camping trips including dirt bike riding, enjoying the boys and grandchildren activities and sporting events as big time soccer Mom and Dad and Grandma and Papa for many years, working with the Shoreline High School reunions, and loved travelling, overseas, especially to Europe and the South Pacific. After Lois got him to try his first cruise, the only question from then on when the word came up was "when and where???" .
Al's career led him into the professional video industry working with many local industries and individuals during his years. After retiring, Al regularly played golf with his neighbors, brothers David and Dick, friends as well as with sons when they can get away. He enjoyed working on his puzzles, playing and enjoying his cats and family dogs. He volunteered at the Heritage Restoration Center working on restoring the vintage planes.
Al is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Lois, sons Leroy, Ken, Craig and wife Jodie, grandchildren Amber, Ashley and Tyler Harwood and his brothers Dave, and Juanita, and Dick and Judy and their families, and Lois's Mother and sisters Barb and Jim and Kathy and Mark and their families.
Knowing that Al is in a better place with no more pain helps us through this process. We thank all of the family and friends that were always there with a helping hand, condolences and good wishes & prayers during this difficult time. All of our fun times and wonderful memories will keep in our hearts and yours, until we meet again.
Love and hugs all from Lois, Leroy, Ken, Craig and Jodie and extended family and friends...... ❤❤❤❤❤
