Our hearts are breaking as we mourn the passing of our mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Annie Peterson passed away Sunday, July 10, 2022 in Seattle. She was born May 3, 1929 to the late Rafael and Hanula, nee Israel, Angel and grew up in Seattle, Washington.
Mom fell in love with our Dad, Gerald, and they married on September 4, 1948. Gerald was Mom’s “One and Only Love”. Life was not always easy for them. Family was the centerpiece of Annie’s life. Dad worked very hard to provide for seven children and Annie devoted herself to her children and home. She once said, “This house may belong to someone else…but it is our home.” Annie, aka “The White Glove Lady”, took pride in keeping our home safe and clean. “You can eat off her floors!” I remember her saying many times, “We may be poor, but we can afford soap!”
Mom was active in Scouting and the PTA, never neglecting her responsibility to raise good, honest, decent children. Our home was loud, really loud. It was the hang out for many of the neighbor kids. Mom never complained. What’s one or two more?
As if seven children plus neighbor kids was not enough, Mom and Dad “adopted” several bachelors who lived across the street from us. Most of the guys were from North Dakota and Minnesota. Mom would set extra places at the dinner table and we would celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas with our older brothers. What’s one or two more? These brothers lovingly called our parents Ma and Pa. Mom washed their clothes for them too. And she firmly reminded them when their hygiene needed to be improved.
Mom had magical powers. Sometimes she would take a quick “cat nap” on the sofa. We could hear her snoring, but she would scare us half to death…”Get out of the cookie jar!” We thought she was amazing!
Mom’s famous potato salad was always expected at potlucks. And her Pistachio Bread recipe has traveled the United States, possibly the world! If you visited Mom you were guaranteed to leave with a loaf of her precious bread and possibly oatmeal cookies from her stock in the freezer!
Annie is preceded in death by the love of her life, Gerald, who passed away on November 27, 2000. It was a very dark day for Mom. She is also preceded in death by her son, Randy, and daughter, Carolyn.
She is survived by her daughters Janice, Marilyn, Linda and sons Carl and Jeff. She is also survived by her daughters-in law Cynthia and Linda and sons-in-law Gary and Dale. Annie has been blessed with 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Though we miss her desperately, we find comfort knowing that she is at peace with her “One and Only Love”.
A graveside service for Annie was held privately at Abbey View Memorial Park, in Brier, WA.
Memorial gifts may be directed to Kline Galland Home, 7500 Seward Park Ave S, Seattle, WA 98118.
