Born April 8, 1913 in Boskoop, Holland, died peacefully in his sleep November 29, 2000. He came to Seattle in 1951 with his wife, Johanna and children Robert and Emile. He started Van den Akker?s Nursery in Bothell in 1954 where he began propagating the Van den Akker Azaleas. He is survived by his wife, Johanna of 57 years; sons, Robert of Monroe, Emile and his wife Margo of Mukilteo and Bob Eugene of Bothell; daughter Carole of Snohomish and his dog Sitka. He was the grower of the world?s most beautiful azaleas, noted trumpet player and musician and a champion speed skater. A narrow form of a weeping Alaskan Cedar, which he propagated, bears his name.
