Bill Cheung Eng was a lifelong Seattlelite. He was the second boy of four children (Wayne, Bill, Harry and June)of Eng See Jom(Cheung) and Chin Tung Pak. He attended Bailey Gatzert Elem. School, Washington Middle School , and graduated from Franklin High School ('40). He loved all sports- bowling, tennis, baseball and golf, and was a charter member of the Cascade Golf Club with his brother Harry, travelling along the Pacific Coast to play numerous golf courses. He especially enjoyed playing with friends Vernon and Mona Beck in his retirement years, and had the good fortune to hit 2 hole-in-ones in his lifetime (1954 and 1997). He was a member of a basketball team that went to San Francisco in 1942, meeting and defeating all challengers. They beat the Troop 3 team of San Francisco, the champion of the CA area that year to become the unofficial champion of the Pacific Coast Chinese teams. His nickname was 'Sluggo', which may have been from his years learning boxing at the YMCA, or chasing unsavory characters from his family's restaurant.
He completed a machinist apprenticeship at the Puget Sound Navy Shipyard as a journeyman machinist. Bill then worked as an experimental machinist at the Boeing Wind Tunnel at Plant II in Seattle, where he retired from after 33 years of service. While working at Boeing, he also obtained an Associate Degree of Industrial Technology from South Seattle Community College. He was baptized by Sister Maureen Bichlerat at the Providence Medical Center while he was in rehab after his back surgery on December 22, 2000 at the age of 88.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Alpha Jean M. Eng, Sons Christopher and Randall Eng, Daughter Erika Eng Yelle, and grandchildren Kai, Maia, Donavan, Malina and Kalea. He will be missed by all, including his many nieces and nephews and good friends.
