Carole Masaye Sugiyama Burrus Sugiyama

Carole passed away on Monday October 26, 2015 due to Pulmonary Fibrosis complications. We miss her dearly, especially her warm smile and words of wisdom and advice. Carole is survived by husband, Dan Thompson; son Tim Burrus (Sheila); daughter Annie Palin (Clint); former husband Tom Burrus; brothers Glenn Sugiyama (Corey); Steve Sugiyama (Carol); Dick Sugiyama (Jan); and Al Sugiyama; grandchildren DJ Custodio; Teiji Burrus; Allison Palin; and Brandon Palin and many other friends and family. Carole was preceded in death by her parents, Sansaku "San" Sugiyama and Susan Teiko (Nagai) Sugiyama.

Carole was born in Hunt, Idaho at Minidoka Japanese Internment Camp during WWII. She was the oldest child & only daughter to San and Susan Sugiyama. She grew up in Seattle, WA and graduated from Garfield High School in 1960. Several years later she received her Cosmetology License. She really enjoyed being a hair stylist in the city. It must have been the beautician in her, she always had manicured nails, hairspray & a teasing comb nearby.

Carole married Tom Burrus in 1968, they called various states home, including NE, FL & CA and had two children, Tim and Andrea. Carole and Tom later divorced but always remained good friends. Carole returned to Seattle, WA in 1990 where she met Dan Thompson. They were married August 2, 1994 and resided in Tukwila, WA where they attended the Seattle Buddhist Center.

Carole enjoyed jazz music. Her favorite song was "Take Five" by The Dave Brubek Quartet. Carole loved playing the nickel slots in Las Vegas and Muckleshoot. She really enjoyed travelling with Dan and was especially fond of Copalis Beach. Carole also loved children and helping them realize their strengths. She worked with various youth programs and the Settle Public Schools assisting children with reading & phonics. She was a positive role model to so many children.

One of Carole's greatest pleasures was being a Grandma to DJ, Teiji, Allison and Brandon. She loved shopping for them, doing crafts, and especially baking and cooking with them. No trip to Grandma's house was complete without making a batch of cookies or sweet treat. Carole's legacy will live on in her four grandchildren and the fun memories they created together.

Memorial service will be held at 12:30 pm Saturday, November 28, 2015at Soka Gakai Intl-USA Seattle Buddhist Center, 3438 S 148th St, Tukwila, WA 98168
