Carole Joy (Kumagai) Hayashida, passed away on Monday, April 29, 2024 at the home she shared with her daughter, son-in-law, and grandchild in Portland, Oregon. She was bravely battling recurrent ovarian cancer.
She was born on March 20,1946, to Nahoshi Kumagai and Shizue Jane (Murakami) Kumagai in Chicago, Illinois, but spent much of her early childhood in Nahcotta, Washington. Her family later moved to Seattle, where she helped care for her mother and younger sister Patricia (Kumagai) Smith, and raised her children.
Carole found success in the fashion retail industry, working her way up the corporate ladder to become a lead regional buyer for the Bon Marché. She transitioned to an Independent Sales Representative when her children were born, so that she could work from home and spend more time with them. She was a loving mother to Paul Waudé and Lauren Waudé. She worked tirelessly to support them, fill their lives with love, and create safety and stability. This was especially true after the death of their father. Carole was known for her incredible strength, contagious sense of humor, and unwavering commitment to her children.
In February 2024, Carole became a grandmother to Lenny Holland Kumagai Hamilton. She was immeasurably excited to be a grandmother. When she learned the news of her cancer returning she committed to treatments in order to extend her time with her grandbaby and fought for every second with them. The family is devastated they did not get more time together.
Carole spent her final evening having dinner with her children and their spouses and playing with her grandbaby. While her passing is a shock, her family finds comfort in knowing that she spent her last day with the people she loved the most.
Friends and family are invited to a memorial service on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at 3PM at Evergreen Washelli 11111 Aurora Ave N, Seattle, WA 98133.
